Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has declared that Lagos politics has matured, describing the state as a pacesetter in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, as the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) formally presented Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat as the All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus candidate for the governorship.

The presentation, led by GAC leader Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi, saw the Lagos State Deputy Governor introduced to the First Lady in what was described as a symbolic but significant political moment.

Speaking during the event, The First Lady commended the GAC for its decision, likening the council to an electoral college and praising its role in ensuring a peaceful and coordinated selection process.
“Politically, Lagos has always been at the forefront, showcasing leadership to the rest of Nigeria.

This peaceful development shows that our politics has come of age,” she said, adding that power ultimately belongs to God.
She also lauded the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, commending his stewardship and offering prayers for him as he prepares for life after office.

Earlier, Governor Sanwo-Olu revealed that Hamzat’s emergence followed extensive consultations with stakeholders, including aspirants who had shown interest in the race. He disclosed that 25 GAC members attended the meeting, where a unanimous decision was reached in support of Hamzat.

The Governor further noted that the candidate had already been presented to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who endorsed the decision. He added that the visit to the First Lady was to seek her blessing and counsel.

In his remarks, Prince Olusi highlighted the cultural significance of involving women in governance within Yoruba tradition, noting that the delegation’s visit was in recognition of the First Lady’s role.

Also speaking, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, praised the First Lady’s contributions to national development and her support for the President.

She thereafter formally presented Dr. Hamzat as the APC consensus candidate, reaffirming the party’s unity and readiness ahead of the forthcoming election.
