
In a bid to strengthen social-emotional learning and enhance classroom teaching techniques, Lions International District 404 A3 recently organized a three-day Lions Quest Skills for Adolescence Workshop for teachers in Lagos Island.
The workshop, held at Christ Church Cathedral School, 34-36 Broad Street, Lagos Island, brought together 35 teachers from both public and private primary and secondary schools across the area. The programme focused on equipping educators with practical skills in social-emotional learning, interactive teaching methods, and positive youth development.
Participating schools included MaryAnne College, Anglican Girls College, St. Peter’s Primary School, Tinubu Methodist School, Command School, St. George’s Boys School, Olanike Dairo Schools, Holy Cross Primary School, Christ Church Cathedral School, Eko Akete Senior High School, Daylab College, and RIO Group of Schools.
The seminar was facilitated by Lion Barrister Adeola Olatunbosun, who delivered engaging and interactive sessions throughout the three-day programme. Participants commended the facilitator’s teaching style, noting that the training maintained high levels of interest and participation, with teachers actively involved in discussions, group assignments, and team presentations.
A total of 12 Lions and eight non-Lion volunteers supported the programme, ensuring its smooth execution. Four Lions—Lion Funmilayo Alabi, Lion Abigail Obogun, Lion Oladeinde Adebunkola, and Lion Fatai Adeloye—were present throughout the workshop and played key roles in coordinating activities.
The initiative received support from several Lions Clubs and individual members across Regions 1, 2, and 3 of District 404 A3. Supporting clubs included Lagos Ikoyi Lions Club, Lekki Elite Lions Club, Yaba Lions Club, Lekki Admiralty Lions Club, and Lagos Doyen Lions Club, among others.
According to the organizers, the training spanned 27 hours over three days and directly engaged 55 individuals, including participants, Lions members, and volunteers. The programme is expected to have a far-reaching impact, with an estimated 1,982 students set to benefit from the knowledge and skills acquired by the trained teachers.
As part of the implementation plan, meetings were held with school proprietors and administrators, with four schools expressing interest in adopting the Lions Quest curriculum. Follow-up engagements are expected within four weeks to facilitate implementation.
The workshop concluded on April 29 with a certification and closing ceremony. Representing the District Governor, Lion Jude Obaro presented certificates to the participants and congratulated them on successfully completing the training.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Lagos Island Chapter, Mr. Salawu A.O., commended Lions Club International for its consistent support of education in Lagos State. He encouraged the teachers to apply the knowledge gained during the workshop in their respective schools for the benefit of students.
The Lions Quest Chairperson, Lion Lady Funmi Alabi, expressed appreciation to all participants for their commitment to the training despite it taking place during the second-term break. She also thanked school proprietors and heads of schools for releasing their teachers to attend the programme.
Special recognition was given to Mr. Abari, the Lagos Island Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) Education Secretary, for providing the venue and supporting the successful hosting of the workshop.
The Lions Quest Committee further acknowledged the contributions of supporting clubs, Lions leaders, donors, and volunteers, including Lion Omotomike Ibikunle, Lion Olusola Oduneye, and Mrs. Sadia Sanusi of Tinubu Methodist School.
The committee also expressed gratitude to the District Governor,Lion Mary Onu, for providing the platform to serve, and to Lion Kola Oyekanmi for his leadership and support towards the success of the programme.
The workshop underscored Lions International District 404 A3’s commitment to empowering educators and promoting positive youth development through quality educational interventions.
