Lekki Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has officially launched its Monthly Environmental Sanitation Advocacy Exercise, marking a renewed commitment to promoting a cleaner and healthier environment across the council area.

The initiative was flagged off at the Lekki LCDA Secretariat by the Chairman, Engr. Rasak Bamidele Kasali (MNSE, MNATE), during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting that drew participation from key community and government figures.

Among those present were the Onilekki of Lekki, Oba Liasim Olumuyiwa Ogunbekun, alongside the Council Manager, Leader of the House, councillors, supervisors, Secretary to the Local Government (SLG), Head of Department of Environment, Baales, religious and political leaders, Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators, and residents.

Addressing the gathering, Engr. Kasali emphasized that environmental laws would be strictly enforced, warning that offenders would face arrest and prosecution.

He outlined measures already in place to improve sanitation, including the deployment of incinerators, removal of shanties, and distribution of waste bins across communities.

The Chairman urged residents to take greater responsibility for their surroundings, calling on them to act as the government’s “eyes and ears” in reporting environmental infractions.

He also cautioned against any form of harassment or assault on environmental officers, revealing plans to establish vigilante teams to monitor compliance and ensure adherence to sanitation regulations.

Kasali commended the Onilekki, Oba Ogunbekun, for maintaining high sanitation standards within his domain, describing him as a strong advocate for environmental cleanliness in Lekki.

In his remarks, the traditional ruler called for stricter action against households without proper waste disposal facilities and decried the prevalence of open defecation and indiscriminate dumping of refuse, particularly along the beachfront.

Also speaking, the General Manager of PSP, Mr. Ilori, assured residents that waste management services remain affordable and encouraged full cooperation with operators to ensure proper waste disposal practices.

The sanitation advocacy initiative, according to the council, is part of broader efforts to prevent disease outbreaks and position Lekki LCDA as one of the cleanest council areas in Lagos State.
