On Sunday, September 21st, the Diocese of Lagos West officially commissioned the new building of St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, Itamaga, Ikorodu. Rt. Reverend Dr. James O. Odedeji, Lord Bishop of the Diocese, led the ceremony.

Bishop Odedeji congratulated the church members, highlighting the dedication as a testament to unity, sacrifice, and commitment to God’s work. He said, “With a heart overflowing with thanksgiving and joy, I felicitate with the Archdeacon, the Church Committee, Building Committee, the Dedication Committee, and all members of Matthew’s Anglican Church, Itamaga, on the glorious occasion of the dedication of this sanctuary unto the Lord.” He emphasized that the dedication is not merely a celebration of bricks and mortar but a visible testimony to the unity, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment of God’s people to His Kingdom work.

Citing Psalm 127:1, Bishop Odedeji said, “The Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.” He commended Vicar Ven. Adeniyi Ajayi for his spiritual leadership and tenacity of purpose, as well as his wife and family for their support. He also appreciated the Parish Council for their wisdom and cooperation, the Building Committee for their diligence, transparency, and devotion, and the youths for their strength and energy, which have been channels of divine help.

The Bishop charged the congregation not to rest on their laurels but to continue to rise higher in spiritual growth, evangelism, and soul-winning. He cited Haggai 2:9, “The glory of this latter house shall be greater than the former, saith the Lord of hosts.” He prayed that the new sanctuary would be a house of prayer for all people, a center of salvation, teaching, healing, and holy worship.

Vicar Ajayi thanked the congregation, Senior Bishops, family, and friends. He emphasized that the church is not for an individual but for God, and it is the responsibility of everyone to support and maintain it. He said, “This church is not mine, it’s not the Bishop’s, it’s not the Archdeacon’s; it’s the house of God.” He added that the new building is a call to greater commitment and service, and he urged the congregation to use it as a launching pad for greater evangelism, deeper discipleship, and serving the needs of their community.

The commissioning marks a significant milestone in the history of St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, Itamaga, and is a testament to the faith and dedication of its members. The ceremony was attended by Bishops, various dignitaries and members of the congregation, who all rejoiced in the Lord’s goodness and provision.
