Princess Samiat Abolanle Bada, Mayoress of Ikosi-Isheri LCDA in her speech, “Traditionally, the International Day of Older Persons is observed on October 1st worldwide. However, due to the significance of Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations, the awareness and recognition of our older persons often get overshadowed. Hence, we have chosen to celebrate our senior citizens separately on this special day.”

She continued “The term “senior citizen” refers to individuals who have retired from various activities or receive an old age pension and are at least 60 or 65 years old. The word “senior” carries connotations of experience, wisdom, and deserving respect. Therefore, it is essential to celebrate Senior Citizens Day to acknowledge their contributions, honor their lifetime of hard work, and ensure they retire with dignity, care, and love.”

The Mayoress acknowledged the challenges faced by our elderly population, including health and financial issues, as well as concerns about security. To alleviate these burdens, the LCDA consistently strives to provide support by offering food items and cash assistance to our senior citizens.

I shall not relent in supporting them. With caring, loving, and beautiful people around, old age is wonderful.” She highlighted the significance of this day, acknowledging that our elderly ones are the custodians of wisdom and knowledge.
