The Lagos State youth Ambassadors Ikorodu division on a mental health awareness tagged MA KÚ’NÙ (DON’T BE SILENT). It is obvious that majorly 75% of youths are suffering from a mental illness e.g anxiety disorder, behavioral and emotional disorder, depression, paranoia, schizophrenia, trauma, ADHD and lots more.
On the 27th of November, 2021. The Lagos State youth Ambassadors representing Ikorodu division decided to reach out to youths in ikorodu to sensitize and inculcate knowledge on how to deal with their mental health, which was the source of encouragement.
The program was held at Ikorodu Youth centre, ITA ELEWA.
The keynote speaker Ms. Funke Shonubi, representing the Lagos State ministry of health said that, mental health is a state of well being in which individual realizes his/her own abilities and can cope what’s the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, it includes our emotional, psychological and social well-being.
Also a representative of the NDLEA (Nigeria drug law enforcement agencies) was present, she reported that thousands of youths are into substance abuse as a result of mental illness, this is the use of illegal drugs such as; cocaine, Indian hemps, heroin, can only lead to damage, the best way to deal with mental illness is to talk about your feelings, ask for help and engage in things you are best at.
The program included football, spoken word poetry and a cardician in person of TEMI was present, as he shared his mental health story on ADHD and displayed his magic. ADHD (Attention Deficit/hyperactive disorder) is one of the most common neuro developmental disorder of childhood, but this mental illness as made him focus on a thing in particular and that is magic.
The team appreciates the participants for showing up for MA KÚ’NÙ, and how they have been able to enlighten the youths in Ikorodu, on how to manage their mental health.
