The National Youth Council of Nigeria, Ikorodu West Local Branch has responded to a purported reclassification of Ebute Empowerment Centre by some groups as figment of imagination, in a press release signed by the Coordinator; Comr Asoro Abubabkri Olatunji, the statement read in part “when we were inaugurated into office in June 11th 2020, our intention was to support government at all cost to provide good governance to the youths and identifying those areas became germane.

Empowerment became our priority and we reawaken our call to the Local Council leadership to see reasons to renovate the Ebute Empowerment Centre which is believed have the capacity to train more than 250 youths at ago. During the Budget Stakeholders’ meeting in late 2020, we reiterated our call for the renovation and we got a positive answer. Few months later, work commenced but the administration’s tenure was almost ending and much could not be done”.

He noted further that “the current administration leaves us with no doubt that the work will be completed. The government is just about 3 month old to prempt anything and we would continue to provide needed support to ensure that government delivers it mandate to the youths. Already, the current Executive Chairman; Hon Sulaimon Kazeem Olanrewaju FCA FCTI has charged us to put all our request in written and submit to his office, definitely, the Youth Empowerment Centre is expected on the list. We have been consulting with stakeholders on the need for a Youth and Sporting Centre in Ikorodu West and just on Friday 5th Nov, 2021 during our National Youth Day Celebration, the DG Lagos State Sports Commission; Hon Toyin Gafar Bolowotan has assured the youth that one is coming very soon if the local government provides land. The government is not resting on it oars and we are constantly engaging them and taking advantage of their will and love for the youths to deliver gains of democracy and deliver beyond expectations”.

Commending the previous administration, the Coordinator noted that “throughout the time spent with the previous administration, we got the support of government and we enjoyed their listening ears. In fact, JTF was set-up at the time because of our call. Job Portal was designed and launched during this time and we did programs around Tuberculosis. Our constant activities and support from the government earn us a little grant from Society For Family Health to execute UNESCO program on Gender Based Violence, even free JAMB was given through us during this time. Lots was achieved and they are in the public for confirmation including our Facebook handle”.

While commending the efforts of the current administration, he noted that “what the current administration has decided to do is to double it support for the youth and in this case, that is not to say that the previous has done nothing. The best that any government can do is to raise the bar of the standards and going forward, we are believing the current administration to set a lasting model for all other local government in Lagos State and Nigeria on youth developmental projects and support. Like Oliver Twist, our expectations are high too and we would be asking for more and more, we would capitalise on their passion and love for the youths to ensure that we have it better than the status quo and of course, it can only get better”.

He listed the achievement of the current administration for the youths by saying “it’s my pleasure to let you know that in just 100 days in office, Hon Sulaimon Kazeem Olanrewaju FCA FCTI has done the following for the youth:

1. Sponsored Enlightenment Campaign against Sickle Cell including free Genotype test and free medical checkup

2. Sponsored Youth Digital Employability Training for the youth through partnership with Ministry of Wealth Creation

3. Just Nov 5th, the National Youth Day was sponsored and celebrated. It provided a platform to discover and celebrate fresh talents in Ikorodu West LCDA.

If all this is achieved in hundred (100) days, we can only say that the future is bright. I use this medium to congratulate the Executive Chairman on this milestone achievement. He would always say “politics is about service to humanity” and we hope that the coming days will reflect more of that”.

He enjoined the youths to remain calm and patient with the government, noting that “we are having sleepless night as much as they are doing to ensure that government deliver the gains of good governance during our time. We would take responsibility for any area where government chooses to go to sleep but we can assure you that they may only be limited by resources not by the will to do. With constant engagement, a greater Ikorodu West will be achieved”.
