In a bid to further strengthen security in Ikorodu Division, the six Council Chairmen in the area have taken a significant step with the unveiling of a joint task force by-law. This development marks a new chapter in the division’s security architecture, building on the successes recorded so far in tackling security challenges. The joint task force, established through the collective effort of the Council Chairmen, has been instrumental in maintaining peace and stability in the area. With the new by-law in place, residents can expect even greater security and stability in the division.
To enhance the effectiveness of the Joint Task Force, the Chairmen also donated 4 patrol vans to assist in carrying out their duties.
The Executive Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government, Hon. Wasiu Adesina, revealed that the Ikorodu Division joint task force initiative, established five years ago, has been instrumental in addressing security challenges in Ikorodu Division.
Adesina recalled that the six council chairmen in the division came together to tackle the issue of BADO and other vices.
The joint task force, Adesina noted, has been effective in maintaining peace and security in the area, and the new by-law would further strengthen its operations. He expressed gratitude to God for the success recorded so far and thanked the councillors for their support in passing the by-law.
Adesina explained that the by-law would be handed over to the incoming administration for signing and further improvement. He described the initiative as laudable and expressed confidence that the incoming administration would build on the progress made so far.
According to Builder Olusesan Daini, the Executuve Chairman Igbogbo-Baiyeku LCDA, he explained that the new by-law would bring together all government and independent security apparatus within the division to work in tandem. This, he said, would ensure that security issues are tackled collectively, rather than in isolation.
The by-law, he noted, would provide a framework for a coordinated security process, with all security agencies operating under one command system.
Daini emphasized that they had taken steps to ensure that security operatives are well-trained and equipped to carry out their duties. He revealed that some of the officers had undergone training at the Nigerian Police Training College and had been certified to work alongside the police. The council, he said, would continue to provide support and training to the security operatives to enhance their effectiveness.
The Executive Chairman expressed confidence that the new security architecture would lead to improved safety and security of lives and property in Ikorodu Division. He acknowledged that the journey ahead might be challenging, but expressed optimism that with collective effort, the council would overcome any obstacles and achieve its security goals.
According to Mr. Paul Lawrence, a member of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, he said the new law represents a crucial step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of Ikorodu citizens.
Lawrence explained that the law is based on the constitutional right of citizens to assist the police in protecting themselves and their property. He noted that the government has a primary responsibility to protect lives and property, and that citizens have a corresponding responsibility to provide assistance to security agencies.
The JTF law, Lawrence said, is an extension of this right, empowering citizens to assist in the protection of their property and themselves. He emphasized that the law has been carefully crafted to ensure that it does not contravene any existing laws and is legally sound.
Lawrence praised the local government chairmen for their initiative and commitment to organizing citizens to assist in security efforts in Ikorodu. He noted that the chairmen’s engagement with the Lagos State Security Council had led to the development of a sustainable security structure that would outlast the pandemic.
The signing of the JTF law, Lawrence said, marks a significant step towards creating a crime-free Ikorodu. He expressed hope that with the support of citizens, the law would provide a strong foundation for a successful and secure Ikorodu.
According to The Apex Leader of Ikorodu West LCDA, Alhaji Jamiu Adio Saka, the intention of the new initiative is not to eradicate existing security operatives but to complement their efforts.
He suggested that for the by-laws to work effectively, they should be digitalized, citing the importance of cameras and digital architecture in modern security systems. Alhaji Saka expressed his gratitude and congratulations to the Council Chairmen for achieving this feat, marking a significant step towards improving security in the area.
The Executive Chairman of Ijede Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Motunrayo Gbadebo-Alogba, expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the Chairmen to stakeholders and security operatives for their participation in by-law signing.
She stated the step taken to improve local security will have a positive impact on the atmosphere of communities in Ikorodu Division. She commended the stakeholders and security operatives for taking time out to attend the event and contribute to this development.
According to the Nigeria Police and Civil Defence representatives, they stated the local security operatives will assist the police in maintaining peace and order, leveraging their proximity to the communities to provide more effective security.
