Asiwaju Reuben Olorunfunmi Basorun, a respected elder statesman and former Commissioner for Education in Lagos State, has expressed his strong reservations about the recent capping of the Iyaloja General of Igbogbo-Bayeku LCDA. Basorun, who is also a former Secretary to the Lagos State Government and current member of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), insists that the rule of law must be respected to avoid another crisis in Igbogbo.

According to Basorun, the appointment of a new Iyaloja General was done without proper consultation and consideration for the people of Igbogbo. He claims that the Oba of Igbogbo, Oba Kasali, and the Iyaloja General, Chief Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, acted beyond their powers in the appointment and capping of the new Iyaloja General. Basorun describes their actions as “Ultra Vires” and a nullity.

The member Governor’s Advisory Council in Lagos State Government stated that he inquired about the actions of Council Chairman Sesan Daini on Monday. According to Basorun, Daini provided a list of attendees and invited relevant stakeholders to discuss the appointment of the Acting Iyaloja. These stakeholders included two Chiefs from Adeboruwa Palace, who were instructed not to attend by Kabiyesi, and representatives from Olubeshe of Ibeshe and the Fidimolu of Elepe.

Basorun emphasized that the Chairman did not act unilaterally and that the role of Kabiyesi is limited to local recognition and respect after the appointment. Basorun also noted that the capping ceremony is ceremonial and that the State Executive Council must approve the appointment of a Kabiyesi. He concluded that the actions of Oba Kasali and Chief Folashade Tinubu-Ojo were “Ultra Vires” and, therefore, a nullity.

Basorun, who was born and raised in Igbogbo, has been actively involved in community service and development for many years. He founded several organizations, including the Igbogbo Market Association, and has played a key role in shaping the community’s development. Basorun’s concerns about the recent appointment are rooted in his desire to maintain peace and stability in the community.

“I cannot sit here and allow Igbogbo to be in flames,” Basorun said. “I have lived in this community all my life, and I have worked tirelessly to promote its development and well-being. I will not stand by and watch as the actions of a few individuals threaten to destabilize our community.”

He stated, this press briefing is to inform the public about a pressing matter, as rumors are circulating that could potentially lead to problems. Although I’m not directly involved, I’ve taken the initiative to reach out to all parties concerned, including Kabiyesi and Iyaloja General, Chief Folashade Tinubu-Ojo. I’m confident that she’s aware of my stance, whether through our phone conversation or the message I sent.

Basorun has called on the relevant authorities to intervene and address the issues surrounding the appointment of the new Iyaloja General. He has also appealed to the people of Igbogbo to remain calm and peaceful, even in the face of this challenge.
