The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), in collaboration with the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN), Lagos State Chapter, has taken a bold step towards addressing environmental challenges associated with bakery operations in the State.
The agency hosted a one-day Stakeholders’ Sensitization Programme with the bakers at the AMBCN Secretariat, Agege, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices in the baking industry.
Representing the General Manager of LASEPA, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, the Director of Land and Water Pollution Control, Mrs. Faderera Koko, stressed the importance of collective action to mitigate the environmental impacts of baking activities.
Dr. Ajayi identified emissions from bakehouses and bakeries as a significant issue, citing pollutants such as particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds. He also pointed out that improper disposal of food waste, packaging materials, and hazardous chemicals contributed to land and water pollution and warned the bakers against unregulated practices for safety.
“Bakeries operating in Lagos need to transition to cleaner energy sources, adopt sustainable waste management practices, and embrace eco-friendly packaging. This will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the adverse environmental and health impacts,” s Ajayi stated
He highlighted the agency’s ongoing monitoring of bakery operations across Lagos’s five divisions—Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, and Epe—where infractions such as noise pollution, unhygienic environments, and improper waste disposal have been identified, warning that government would not allow a compromise in sustainable environmental practices.
He assured stakeholders that the government is actively supporting the transition to cleaner energy solutions, including cleaner energy ovens, to promote a healthier and more sustainable baking industry.
The sensitization programme featured interactive sessions aimed at equipping participants with practical strategies to reduce emissions, improve waste management, and adopt energy-efficient practices.
Some of the topics discussed included the use of alternative energy sources such as biogas, the importance of eco-friendly cleaning agents, and staff education on environmental responsibility.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of AMBCN Lagos Chapter,Mr Ayoola Matthew expressed appreciation for LASEPA’s proactive engagement with the baking industry and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to supporting environmental sustainability goals.
He encouraged members to prioritize environmentally conscious business practices.
The meeting came to a close with both parties pledged to work together in enforcing regulations, and ensuring a cleaner, healthier Lagos that will be the pride of all.
