Prince ‘Sina Bilesanmi, the National President of Association of Telephone, Cable TV and Internet Subscriber of Nigeria (ATCIS) and members visited the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) office in Abuja on July 12th, 2023. The visit was a courtesy call to the National Commissioner/CEO and his team of staff at NDPC. During the visit, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner/CEO, expressed his appreciation for ATCIS and its efforts to benefit the 223 million membership telecom subscribers in Nigeria.

Dr. Olatunji also discussed the commission’s upcoming event in Lagos on July 19th, 2023, and how NDPC needs ATCIS’ support as a major stakeholder representing telecom subscribers across the 36 states within the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria. The National Commissioner/CEO agreed to collaborate with ATCIS in terms of training and employment of Nigerian youths on the importance of data protection.

NDPC is working on how over 500 data collectors will register with the commission since President Tinubu has signed Data Protection as part of ATCIS advocacy body done. The head of the commission, Dr. Olatunji, expressed his appreciation for Hon Prince’Sina Bilesanmi and other members’ efforts to benefit the 223 million membership telecom subscribers in Nigeria.

The objective of Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) is to safeguard the rights of natural persons to data privacy, foster safe conduct for transactions involving the exchange of personal data, prevent manipulation of personal data, and ensure that Nigerian businesses remain competitive in international trade through the safe-guards afforded by a protective data privacy regime. The NDPR also aims to promote innovation and growth of the digital economy in Nigeria by creating an enabling environment for businesses to operate in a secure and predictable legal framework.

It seeks to establish Nigeria as a safe and secure destination for personal data, which will in turn boost the confidence of foreign investors and encourage cross-border data flows. The NDPR also provides a framework for the protection of personal data in line with global best practices, and ensures that data controllers and processors are held accountable for their actions.

ATCIS-Nigeria appreciates Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Executive Order. Prince Sina Bilesanmi is set to meet with President Tinubu in August on the 5% telephone tax. The meeting will be an opportunity for the National President of ATCIS to discuss the impact of the tax on telecom subscribers in Nigeria and how it can be reduced to the benefit of the Nigerian people.

Overall, the NDPC visit was a productive one, and ATCIS is looking forward to collaborating with NDPC and other stakeholders to improve data protection and the telecom industry in Nigeria.
