A health delegation from Igbogbo/Baiyeku Local Council Development Authority (LCDA) on April 8, 2026, paid a familiarization visit to Ikorodu General Hospital as part of efforts to enhance collaboration and improve healthcare service delivery, particularly in the area of patient referrals.

The LCDA team, led by the Supervisor for Health, Miss Patricia, included the Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Amanda Gideon; Apex Nurse, Ogunbiyi Olayinka; and a representative of the Ward Health Committee (WHC), Mrs. Onifade.

They were received by key officials of the hospital, including the Assistant Medical Director, Dr. Kareem; Assistant Medical Director, Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G), Dr. Onaolapo; Apex Nurse, Akintunde; and the Head of Social Work.

The visit aimed to provide the LCDA team with deeper insight into the hospital’s operations while strengthening coordination between primary healthcare centres (PHCs) and the general hospital. Central to discussions was the need to improve the referral system, reduce delays, and address challenges such as limited bed space.

During the engagement, the Head of Social Work and the Head of the O&G Department raised concerns about the appropriateness of some referred cases, questioning whether referral limits were fully understood at the PHC level.

In response, Dr. Gideon and Apex Nurse Ogunbiyi maintained that referral protocols and limits are well understood by PHC personnel. They stressed that the priority remains ensuring timely response and prompt medical attention for all referred patients.

Both parties agreed on the need for improved communication and coordination to enhance patient management and minimize referral-related challenges.

Speaking at the meeting, Dr. Kareem assured the visiting team of the hospital’s commitment to stronger collaboration and pledged to escalate key issues discussed to the Chief Medical Director (CMD) for further action.

As part of efforts to streamline the referral process, the team also interacted with nurses in the O&G department, exchanged contact details, and established direct communication channels to facilitate faster response times.

The visit concluded on a positive note, with both the LCDA health team and hospital management expressing a shared commitment to improving synergy between PHCs and secondary healthcare facilities.

The engagement is expected to result in more efficient referral processes and improved patient care outcomes across the Igbogbo/Baiyeku axis. Group photographs were taken to document the visit.
