Igbogbo-Baiyeku Local Council Development Area joined the global community on April 7 to commemorate World Health Day 2026, marking the founding of the World Health Organization in 1948, with a series of impactful health programmes aimed at improving the wellbeing of residents.
This year’s theme, “Together for Health: Stand with Science,” underscores the need for governments, communities, and individuals to unite behind evidence-based solutions and rebuild trust in scientific expertise. It highlights the critical role of science—from life-saving vaccines to data-driven policies—in protecting lives and strengthening health systems. The campaign also emphasizes the interconnected nature of health, spanning human, animal, and environmental wellbeing, while calling for collective action to ensure that facts, not fear, guide health decisions.
In line with this global message, IBLCDA rolled out activities designed to promote preventive healthcare and community awareness. The day’s events commenced with an Executive Walk for Fitness, led by the Council Manager, Mr. Afolabi Babatunde, alongside the Supervisor for Health, Miss Okosodo Patricia; the Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Akande Gideon; and other members of the management team.
Following the fitness walk, the team carried out sensitization visits to key public gathering points, including market squares, BRT waiting areas, motor parks, and okada riders’ hubs across the LCDA.
Residents were educated on appropriate health-seeking behaviour and encouraged to take advantage of affordable primary healthcare services within the community.
Special emphasis was placed on accessing free immunization, antenatal care and delivery services, and family planning services available at the LCDA’s Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs).
The outreach also included awareness on the Ilera Eko Health Insurance Scheme, a state-backed initiative now compulsory for Lagos residents.
As part of efforts to deepen public engagement, a one-hour radio programme was held on IKD FM, where residents were further enlightened on the importance of timely healthcare and the role of PHCs as the first point of contact.
Speaking during the programme on behalf of the Executive Chairman, Omo’ba Hammed Olalekan Aroyewun, the Supervisor for Health, Miss Okosodo Patricia, emphasized that good health outcomes depend on trust in science and early access to care.
She urged residents to avoid self-medication and rely on qualified health professionals, noting that “standing with science means embracing proven medical practices that save lives and improve community wellbeing.”
She further stated that the administration, under its Glory Agenda, remains committed to delivering accessible, affordable, and people-centered healthcare, ensuring that no resident is left behind.
She also highlighted achievements of the current administration, including the rehabilitation of Bayeku PHC, provision of first aid boxes to schools, support for immunization programmes, staff capacity development, recruitment of ad-hoc personnel, and monthly wellness checks for staff.
Looking ahead, she disclosed plans to provide solar-powered electricity to PHCs in phases to ensure uninterrupted healthcare delivery across the LCDA.
The World Health Day activities concluded in the afternoon at the LCDA Secretariat, where residents benefited from a free wellness check exercise, including primary prevention screenings, vital signs monitoring, medical consultations, and testing for hepatitis B, syphilis, random blood sugar, and HIV.
The commemoration reflects IBLCDA’s continued commitment to strengthening primary healthcare delivery while aligning with global efforts to promote science-driven solutions for healthier communities.
