The United Area Club of Ikorodu has intensified its call for the emergence of an Ikorodu indigene as Governor of Lagos State in 2027, declaring that the division deserves equitable representation after decades of perceived political marginalisation.
The group, which described itself as a non-governmental organisation, said its “Ikorodu for Governor” campaign is a peaceful advocacy aimed at drawing attention to the need for inclusiveness in the state’s political leadership.
Speaking on behalf of the group, its Chairman, Chief Olabinjo Olanrewaju, noted that Ikorodu Division has not occupied any significant civilian political office in Lagos State for over three decades, stressing that the time has come for the area to produce the next governor.
According to him, the group’s mobilisation efforts, including recent rallies in support of the Renewed Hope Agenda, are part of broader consultations and engagements with political stakeholders across the state.
“We are not out to fight or attack anyone. This is an appeal. Ikorodu deserves a fair chance, and we are calling on all stakeholders to support the emergence of an Ikorodu son or daughter as governor in 2027,” he said.
Olanrewaju added that the group has been engaging political leaders within and outside Ikorodu, including members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), to build consensus and advance its cause.
He further pointed out that other divisions have produced governors, while Badagry has produced deputy governors twice, whereas Ikorodu has largely been left out aside from the military administration era several decades ago.
As part of its broader political stance, the group also declared support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, endorsing him for a second term in office.
In his remarks, the Ayangburen of Ikorodu Kingdom, Oba Abdulkabir Adewale Shotobi, commended the unity and determination of Ikorodu stakeholders in pursuing the governorship ambition.
He noted that traditional rulers across Ikorodu Division are aligned with the aspiration and committed to supporting the cause.
“I appreciate this great move by the people of Ikorodu. All traditional rulers in the division are in support, and we are not relenting. I will deliver this message to Asiwaju that Ikorodu people are ready to produce the next governor,” the monarch said.
Oba Shotobi added that the ambition is open to any qualified indigene of Ikorodu, regardless of gender, affirming that both men and women from the division are capable of leading the state.
