In a display of early political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections, leaders and stakeholders from Ikorodu Division on Monday converged for a unity rally to reaffirm their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, pledging continued loyalty to his administration and the All Progressives Congress.
The rally followed an earlier press conference held at the palace of the Ayangburen of Ikorodu and Paramount Ruler of Ikorodu Division, Oba (Engr.) Kabiru Adewale Shotobi, where the monarch, alongside other traditional rulers in the division, publicly declared their backing for President Tinubu. They described his leadership as pivotal to Nigeria’s stability and long-term development.
Beyond the endorsement of the President, leaders and stakeholders at the event used the occasion to renew calls for Ikorodu Division to produce the next Governor of Lagos State in 2027. They said that Ikorodu, having consistently aligned with progressive politics over the years, deserved the opportunity, urging President Tinubu and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State to consider the demand.
The Lagos State Chairman of the APC, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, who attended the rally, commended the people of Ikorodu Division for their steadfast loyalty to the party and their early mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections. He praised the division’s political organisation and consistency, noting that Ikorodu has remained a stronghold of progressive politics in Lagos State and beyond.
Also speaking, Senator Tokunbo Abiru reaffirmed the resolve of the people of Ikorodu Division, Lagos East Senatorial District and Lagos State to stand firmly with President Tinubu.
He said the President demonstrated courage and clarity at a critical moment in Nigeria’s history by implementing tough but necessary economic reforms following the 2023 elections.
According to the senator, these reforms have begun to yield tangible benefits, including improved federal allocations to states, efforts to stabilise food prices, the introduction of student loans through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), access to affordable consumer credit via CrediCorp, and significant investments in digital and physical infrastructure.
He said the initiatives were designed to ease household pressures, support small businesses and create opportunities for young Nigerians.
Abiru added that Ikorodu Division remains united and ready to mobilise in support of President Tinubu’s second term, pledging continued backing for the Renewed Hope Agenda.
In his remarks, Rep. Babajimi Benson, representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency, described the large turnout at the rally as a clear indication of public confidence in the President’s leadership. He said the endorsement reflected the belief of the people of Ikorodu that continuity at the federal level would further accelerate development across the country.
Leaders of the APC and members of the Governance Advisory Council from Ikorodu Division, led by Prince Abiodun Ogunleye, also reiterated the division’s long-standing commitment to progressive governance since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. They emphasised that Ikorodu’s political relevance extends beyond elections to grassroots mobilisation, policy advocacy and community development initiatives aligned with government programmes.
Hon. Aro Moshood Abiodun (AMA), representing Ikorodu Constituency II, said the division was united in purpose and determined to contribute significantly to securing victory for the APC in 2027. He noted that Ikorodu has a responsibility not only to support President Tinubu’s re-election but also to work towards sustained prosperity and development for the division and the nation.
It was well attended by all executive chairmen across Ikorodu Division, who jointly pledged their support for President Tinubu’s administration and committed to closer collaboration with state and federal authorities to deliver people-centred governance at the grassroots.
