The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has empowered 50 women and youths in Eredo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Epe, through a five-day Water Hyacinth Recycling Training Programme aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and economic empowerment.

The training, organised in partnership with social enterprise, Mitimeth, took place from January 19 to 23, 2026, and focused on transforming invasive water hyacinth into innovative and marketable products while addressing environmental pollution along Lagos waterways.

Participants were equipped with hands-on skills in harvesting, processing, and recycling water hyacinth, alongside sessions on safety practices, entrepreneurship, and sustainable environmental management. The programme encouraged creativity, job creation, and responsible environmental stewardship.

Speaking on the initiative, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Blue Economy, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, reaffirmed LASWA’s commitment to pioneering solutions that enhance waterway safety, protect aquatic ecosystems, and uplift riverine communities.

He noted that turning water hyacinth from an environmental nuisance into a source of income aligns with Lagos State’s vision for sustainability, inclusive growth, and employment generation.

Facilitators from Mitimeth provided interactive demonstrations and personalised mentorship, enabling participants to immediately apply their newly acquired skills. The beneficiaries showcased a range of recycled products and expressed plans to form cooperatives and micro-enterprises.

Commending the initiative, the Executive Chairman of Eredo LCDA, Hon. Monsuru Akinloye, described the programme as timely and impactful, noting its potential to address water hyacinth challenges while empowering women and youths with valuable, income-generating skills.

LASWA disclosed that over 450 women and young people have benefited from similar programmes across riverine communities in Lagos State, adding that plans are underway to expand the initiative statewide.
