The pioneer graduating class of CMS Girls Grammar School, popularly known as the Class of ’85, has celebrated its 40th anniversary, marking four decades since they completed their secondary education at the institution established under the administration of former Lagos State Governor, the late Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande.
The anniversary celebration brought together members of the set from within Nigeria and the diaspora to reflect on their shared journey and the enduring impact of the school on their personal and professional lives.
Speaking at the event, the President of the Class of ’85, Mrs Taiwo Salvador, described their years at CMS Girls Grammar School as a “gem” experience, proudly recalling the class nickname, “the gem that came out of the chicken house,” a reference to the modest beginnings of the school and the quality of education they received.
She noted that their story remains a strong testament to the educational vision of Governor Jakande, whose policies helped make quality education accessible to children from both middle- and low-income families, thereby narrowing social gaps and creating opportunities for many to excel.
According to her, the 40th anniversary was not only a celebration of individual achievements but also a tribute to the school’s lasting legacy in shaping disciplined and accomplished women.
The Chairman of the 40th Anniversary Celebration Committee and Vice President of the Class of ’85, Miss Kehinde Oluwadimu, expressed appreciation to all members of the set and supporters who contributed in various ways to the success of the celebration and to initiatives aimed at making a positive impact on the school.
She commended the unity and commitment displayed by members despite being spread across different parts of the world.
Other prominent members of the set who participated in the celebration included Miss Omotiefe Abolagba, Mrs Bunmi Busari (UK), Mrs Yetunde Olaoke (UK), Miss Ebby Momoh, Tope Awoniyi and Pastor Shola Atere from Ibadan, among others.
The class also paid special tribute to some of their former teachers who played significant roles during their formative years, including Mr Martins, Mr Oresegun and Mr Lawal.
Particular appreciation was extended to the late Mrs Abiodun Kasunmu for her profound influence on their lives and character development. Mrs Kasunmu, who was fondly remembered during the event, is the mother of the current member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Ikeja II Constituency, Hon. Kasunmu.
In her closing remarks, Mrs Salvador acknowledged the support received from friends and well-wishers from Lagos and beyond, thanking them for standing by the class over the years.
She offered prayers for continued friendship, love and unity among members, expressing hope that the bond shared by the Class of ’85 would continue to thrive for another 40 years in good health, long life and peace of mind.
