The Conference of State Youth Parliament Speakers (COSYPS) has thrown its weight behind the Reserved Seats Bill for Women, describing it as a bold and historic move toward achieving gender balance and inclusive governance in Nigeria.

In a statement signed by its Deputy Chairperson, Rt. Hon. Itunuoluwa Maria Soniregun, who is also the Speaker Lagos State Youth Parliament, the Conference commended the sponsors of the Bill and praised members of the National Assembly for fostering discussions that advance equitable political representation across all levels of government.

“As young legislators and advocates for participatory democracy, we recognize that the strength of any nation lies in the inclusion of all voices particularly women, who make up nearly half of our population,” Soniregun said. “The Reserved Seats Bill is not just about fairness; it is about unlocking the full potential of Nigeria.”

She noted that youth parliaments across the federation have witnessed the transformative impact of female leadership at the grassroots and state levels, adding that COSYPS stands firmly with the national movement for gender-balanced governance.

“This Bill will correct historical imbalances and open up pathways for millions of young women to step forward, serve, and lead,” she added. “We believe it represents a generational opportunity to reshape Nigeria’s political culture into one that reflects our shared values of equality, justice, and progress.”

Soniregun also called on civil society groups, the media, and youth-focused organizations to amplify advocacy efforts in support of the Bill, emphasizing that greater female participation in governance enhances accountability, empathy, and social impact.

The Conference reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with legislative bodies and civic institutions to strengthen democracy, promote youth inclusion, and advance gender-sensitive policies across the country.
