President Bola Tinubu has called on young Nigerian digital media influencers to utilize their platforms to drive national progress. Speaking at the Progressives Digital Media Summit, themed “Unveiling the Critical Role of New Media in National Development,” Tinubu urged the youth to build businesses that create jobs, produce unifying content, and serve as positive forces for societal development. He emphasized the importance of verifying information before sharing it to prevent the spread of misinformation.

The President commended the creativity and resilience of Nigerian youth, describing digital media as a key driver of economic and social transformation. He noted that digital media has become a central platform for economic growth, civic engagement, and social change, providing a voice for previously unheard individuals.

Tinubu assured that his administration is committed to supporting digital innovation through initiatives like the National Digital Innovation Fund and policies that promote a thriving startup ecosystem. However, he cautioned digital media practitioners to be vigilant against disinformation and cyber threats, emphasizing the need for responsibility and purpose in their online endeavors.

Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, praised digital media practitioners who have consistently stood up for Nigeria and projected the nation positively on the global stage:

“You are the vanguard of a reborn Nigeria, determined to reach for the stars. Under President Tinubu’s leadership, our nation has begun its long-delayed march toward greatness. The road may be challenging, but it is necessary,” he stated.

In a goodwill message, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, highlighted the significance of the Summit. He noted that lessons from recent elections in countries like the U.S. and Germany underscore how digital media have become crucial battlegrounds—beyond mere entertainment—for shaping poll outcomes.

“However, social media is not a fair battleground. As a public square, it is often chaotic and unregulated. Users frequently disregard rules. Divisive content is rampant. Deepfakes and AI-generated content are increasingly used against political opponents. Posts are driven by clicks, not truth or accuracy. Misinformation spreads five times faster than official corrections.” Onanuga observed.

He expressed optimism that the Summit would address these challenges, focusing on strategies to combat fake news and misinformation.

Segun Dada, Special Assistant to the President on New Media and convener of the summit, highlighted the rapid evolution of digital media over the past decade. From a platform for personal connections, it has grown into a potent driver of communication, innovation, and influence.

Dada emphasized the need to leverage this power for Nigeria’s benefit while mitigating associated risks, including privacy issues and threats to social unity.

He noted that responsible digital engagement can foster national development and promote a positive narrative about Nigeria. Dada also called on influencers to utilize their platforms to amplify messages of unity, peace, and progress. By doing so, he said, they can play a crucial role in shaping the country’s future.
