
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged for collective action to eliminate Obstetric Fistula, a preventable and treatable condition, on the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula. In her message, she highlighted the silent suffering of countless women and girls in Nigeria and worldwide.
The theme for this year’s International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, “Breaking the Cycle: Preventing Fistula Worldwide,” emphasizes the need for bold steps to prevent the condition. Senator Tinubu noted that many Nigerian women suffer in silence, isolated and stigmatized, often due to circumstances surrounding childbirth.
The First Lady emphasized that prevention is key, involving strengthened maternal health services, ending child marriage, empowering women and girls through education, and ensuring skilled care during childbirth. She called for an end to the stigmatization of women with Obstetric Fistula and urged support for those affected.
Senator Tinubu concluded by urging Nigerians to commit to ending Obstetric Fistula, emphasizing that collective action can make a difference. She stressed that it’s time to take bold steps to prevent the condition and support those affected.
