At the recently concluded Students’ Career Fair 5.0, held at the Multipurpose Hall, Yaba College of Technology, Engr. Sheriff Lamidi delivered a compelling call to action, urging Lagos-based students to embrace green technologies as vital pathways to survival and prosperity in today’s rapidly evolving economic landscape. Speaking on the theme, “The Economic Landscape: My Place, My Impact,” Engr. Lamidi underscored the critical role of sustainable innovation in addressing pressing global challenges such as climate change, resource depletion, and environmental degradation.
“Green technologies are not just tools; they are essential pathways for ensuring our survival and prosperity in a rapidly evolving economy,” he stated, inspiring the audience to take ownership of their roles in shaping a sustainable future.
He highlighted the importance of renewable energy, sustainable materials, and energy-efficient designs in combating climate change and driving economic growth.
In his professional cohort session, Engr. Lamidi also shared practical applications of green technologies:
Renewable Energy Systems: Solar, wind, and hydropower as sustainable energy sources.
Sustainable Materials Engineering: Using agricultural waste to develop eco-friendly composites, a subject closely tied to one of his ongoing research.
Transportation Innovation: Advocating for the conversion of petroleum vehicles to CNG systems to reduce environmental impacts.
He challenged the students to take ownership of their futures: “As future engineers, you are at the heart of this green revolution. You have the power to lead innovations that will shape a sustainable future. Embrace opportunities, pursue knowledge relentlessly, and always prioritize solutions that balance technological advancement with environmental preservation.”
During the session, I guided participants through actionable strategies for personal and professional growth in the green economy. We explored how to:
Identify individual contributions to sustainability.
Position themselves for opportunities in green industries.
Develop skills aligned with emerging technological trends.
The enthusiasm and engagement of the students were inspiring, as they asked thought-provoking questions and eagerly discussed their aspirations. This event underscored the immense potential of Nigeria’s youth to create a sustainable future.
Kudos to COHI for organizing such a transformative initiative. Together, we are shaping a generation that understands the critical role of sustainability in engineering and beyond.
