The Surulere Local Government Council has taken a significant step in promoting the area’s cultural heritage and community development with the unveiling of the 2025 Surulere Day mascot and celebration of the Fanty Carnival. The event, which was marked with great enthusiasm, is a continuation of last year’s celebration, which was widely acclaimed.

The Executive Chairman of Surulere Local Government, Hon. Sulaimon Bamidele Yusuf noted that the council is committed to making the event an annual celebration, as promised during the 2024 Surulere Day.

A review committee was set up after last year’s event to evaluate, review, analyze, and recommend ways to improve on the activities. The committee’s findings and recommendations have been instrumental in shaping this year’s event, with new ideas and improvements being introduced. Hon. Yusuf assured that all deliberations, recommendations, and observations during the 2024 Surulere Day have been taken into consideration, and the council is confident of a successful outing this year.

Hon. Yusuf emphasized that all hands are on deck to ensure the carnival’s success and thanked everyone for their time. He wished the gathering a wonderful day and blessed them.

Speaking further on the Fanti carnival, The Chairman explained that the relocation of people from the island to Surulere, especially during the construction of the Eko bridge, has created a strong bond between the two areas.

He noted that the carnival is an opportunity to promote Lagos State’s cultural diversity and unity, and to showcase Surulere’s cultural identity.

The Chairman emphasized the benefits of events like the carnival, which brought business opportunities, cultural exchange, and community unity. He urged Lagosians to support the government, expressing optimism that the policies introduced by the President will yield positive results in the future, leading to a better Lagos and Nigeria.

Hon. Desmond Elliot, member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Surulere Constituency 1, highlighted the importance of cultural events in promoting heritage and unity. He suggested incorporating the carnival into Detty December celebrations to further showcase Lagos’ rich cultural identity.

The lawmaker emphasized the need to promote and preserve Lagos’ culture, not just through language but also by practicing its values.

He noted that this would be attractive to foreigners and essential for maintaining the state’s cultural heritage. Elliot also commended the development of Olowogbowo, describing it as a thriving area that has evolved beyond its village roots.
