
A fire broke out on a Lagos State Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) boat, Igbega Eko, at the Ipakodo Terminal in Ikorodu this morning. The incident occurred around 6:45 a.m. after 19 passengers had boarded the vessel.
All passengers were safely evacuated, but nine sustained burn injuries and are receiving medical attention at the Ikorodu General Hospital and Vima Hospital. The injured passengers will be treated free of charge as passenger insurance coverage is in place.
LAGFERRY activated emergency protocols, and the company expressed gratitude to all responders, including LASWA, NIWA, private boat operators, and other rescuers. They also commended the passengers for their cooperation during the evacuation.
A full-scale investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire and prevent future incidents. LAGFERRY is also reinforcing safety measures and inspections across its fleet.
