… To Foster Peace, Unity Among Youth and Security Agencies

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Igbogbo-Baiyeku Local Branch, embarked on a community policing initiative aimed at fostering partnership between the youth and law enforcement agencies. Comr. Ridwan Ogunsowo, Coordinator of the NYCN Igbogbo-Baiyeku branch, disclosed that the program seeks to promote peace and unity among residents, particularly the youth, in the community.
According to Ogunsowo, the initiative involves collaboration with voluntary youth organizations, community-based groups, and neighborhood police to ensure a harmonious relationship between the youth and law enforcement agencies. The ultimate goal, he emphasized, is to create an environment where youth development can thrive.
Ogunsowo appealed to law enforcement agencies to work closely with the youth, recognizing them as friends and partners in community development. He also encouraged residents to report any incidents or concerns to the nearest community policing station or neighborhood watchers, who would channel the reports to the appropriate authorities.
According to Romoke, the program aims to dispel the notion that the police are enemies of the people, instead encouraging residents to view them as friends and partners in maintaining law and order.
The General Secretary noted that many people are hesitant to visit police stations, fearing arrest or intimidation. However, she stressed that police stations are open to the public, not just for reporting crimes, but also for casual visits to familiarize oneself with the officers. By building relationships with law enforcement, residents can help create a safer and more peaceful community.
She urged her fellow youths to take an active role in maintaining a secure and livable environment, where everyone can live in peace. She emphasized the importance of saving families and properties from crime and risk, and encouraged youths to be peaceful and law-abiding.
CSP Clement Akinola, Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Igbogbo Road, emphasized the importance of youths being law-abiding and aware of their surroundings. He encouraged them to report any suspicious activities to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), stating that “deep calls unto the deep, you shouldn’t be overly shaky if there’s nothing fishy with you”.
Akinola also warned against spreading rumors and misinformation on social media, urging the community to verify information before sharing it.
DSC Adetola Femi of the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps (LNSC) echoed Akinola’s words, stating that “security is everyone’s business.” He encouraged residents to speak up when they witness something suspicious, rather than assuming it doesn’t concern them.
DSP Charles Uba, representing the DPO of Mopol 63 Ikorodu, emphasized the need for collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies and youths. He praised the current police leadership for their efforts in community policing, which aims to create a better and safer community.
DSC John Patrick of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) encouraged them to be security-conscious and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their properties, also call on Security Agencies.
