The annual Nine Lessons and Carols Service, themed “Immanuel, Our Restorer of Hope,” was held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, bringing together notable Nigerians and leaders of faith.

This year’s service featured scripture readings by distinguished personalities, including General Yakubu Gowon (retd), Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyeosom Wike, President of Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Olanipekun Olukoyede, and First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, who took the 8th lesson.

In his sermon, Vice President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev. Baba Payan, emphasized the importance of brotherly love, compassion, and kindness during the festive season. He urged Christians to embody the spirit of love, quoting biblical passages such as Hebrews 13:1-2, 1 John 4:7-9, and John 3:16.

Rev. Payan stressed that love transcends boundaries of ethnicity, religion, and social status, and encouraged congregants to reach out to those less fortunate during this festive season. “Your neighbor is anyone who requires your help,” he said.

He also highlighted the significance of love in spiritual life, stating that “without love, even the most eloquent speech is meaningless.” Rev. Payan quoted 1 Corinthians 13:1, which states that without love, even the most eloquent speech is meaningless.

The cleric further elaborated on the significance of love in spiritual life by quoting a historical statement attributed to Napoleon Bonaparte regarding Christ’s enduring influence compared to earthly kingdoms. “Napoleon said that while earthly kingdoms may fall, Christ’s kingdom endures because it is built on love,” he said.

The service was attended by other notable personalities, including President of Senate, Godswill Akpabio, Head of Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, ministers, Former First Lady, Patience Jonathan, traditional rulers, security chiefs, and members of the diplomatic corps.
