… As Priest Raises Alarm, Pollution Puts Sacred Etunrenren Spring Water at Risk

The Etunrenren Lefun Losun shrine, home to the sacred Etunrenren natural spring water, plays a vital role in the coronation of Obas in Ikorodu Kingdom. Otunba Ajadi Banjoko, the Chief Priest of the shrine, revealed that any Oba-elect must drink the water from the spring for three months while in traditional seclusion before ascending to the throne.
The shrine, located in Ikorodu, is a significant cultural and historical site, with the Etunrenren spring water holding spiritual importance for the community. Otunba Banjoko emphasized the need to preserve the site, citing the devastating effects of pollution and neglect.
According to the Priest, the Etunrenren spring water was discovered by a woman from the Aige family, who went missing while washing clothes in the river. Her bangles and jewelry were later found on a rock near the spring, and the water was named “Otutu Reren” due to its cold temperature.
The Etunrenren Spring Water is also home to various traditional artifacts and relics, including the “Omi Abalaye,” a sacred water that is given to the king throughout his reign. Otunba Banjoko highlighted the importance of the shrine, stating that it is a symbol of Ikorodu’s rich cultural heritage.
In recent years, efforts have been made to preserve the Spring Water and its surroundings. Otunba Banjoko has worked tirelessly to protect the site from pollution and neglect, and has called on the Government and local authorities to support these efforts.
The Etunrenren Spring Water has also been recognized by the Lagos State Government as a significant cultural and historical site, and efforts are being made to include it in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
As part of the preservation efforts, the shrine has been opened to the public, allowing visitors to learn about its rich history and cultural significance.
