As the world marks International Migrants Day, Lagos grassroots leader and environment advocate Olufemi Ibine has called on migrants in Lagos to embrace and support political initiatives that align with the indigenes’ agenda, fostering harmony and progress in the city’s diverse landscape.
In a heartfelt message delivered to commemorate the occasion, Ibine acknowledged the resilience, courage, and hope that define the migrant experience. He emphasized that migration is a universal human journey, deeply interwoven into the fabric of society.
“Today is not just a commemoration; it is a reminder of the journeys taken, the sacrifices made, and the dreams of a better life that persist across borders, oceans, and continents,” Ibine stated.
Drawing from the rich history of Ejigbo, Ibine highlighted the significant role migration has played in shaping the community and the nation at large. “Migration has contributed immensely to our personal success stories and has strengthened our communities and families,” he said.
However, Ibine also pointed out the challenges migrants often face, such as prejudice, discrimination, and hardship. “For many, the journey is not just physical; it is also emotional and spiritual. As a community, we must continue to offer support, solidarity, and compassion to our migrant brothers and sisters.”
A Call for Inclusive Development
In his address, Ibine urged migrants in Lagos to actively participate in and support initiatives that prioritize the political choice, welfare and development agenda of indigenes. He stressed that fostering inclusivity and mutual respect is key to building a society where all residents, regardless of origin, can thrive.
“On this International Migrants Day, I call upon all of us to renew our commitment to promoting empathy, respect, and collaboration. Let us recognize that every migrant is a person with a story, with rights, and with the potential to contribute to our shared prosperity,” he said.
Ibine also advocated for better policies and a culture of understanding that would ensure migrants feel welcomed, safe, and valued.
Migration as a Force for Unity
The community leader emphasized that migration should be seen as a positive force for change and progress rather than a burden. “By offering support and working together, we can create an environment where migration becomes a symbol of unity and progress,” Ibine concluded.
As Lagos continues to grow as a melting pot of cultures, the call to harmonize the efforts of migrants and indigenes serves as a reminder of the city’s potential to lead by example in inclusivity and sustainable development.
This International Migrants Day, let us celebrate the contributions of migrants while working toward a future where their dreams and sacrifices are fully recognized and appreciated.
Happy International Migrants Day.
