The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has organised a day workshop for Chemicals handlers stakehimders across the State, with a call for compliance with government regulations on chemical handling and storage for human safety and environmental Sustainability.
The Workshop , held at Assbifi Suites & Event Centre, Alausa, Ikeja was themed “Current Trends in Chemical Handling and Usage (Best Practices),”
The Workshop focused on enhancing safe practices, building capacity, and ensuring regulatory compliance in chemical handling and storage across Lagos State.
The Special Adviser to Governor Sanwo-Olu on theEnvironment, Mr. Olakunle Rotimi Akodu, who was represented by the Director of Sanitation Services, Dr. Hassan Sanuth, emphasized the significance of chemical management for public health, safety, and sustainable socio-economic development.
He noted that the workshop is aimed at building the capacity of chemical handlers, raising awareness about associated risks, and equipping them with necessary skills for safe handling and storage.
Akodu stressed the importance of adhering to the Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017, which empowers LASEPA to regulate chemical usage in the State. He reminded stakeholders of the prohibition of manufacturing or storing of chemicals without a permit, restrictions on chemical activities in residential areas, and the requirement for proper disposal of chemicals with LASEPA certification.
He also highlighted the need for chemical storage facilities to maintain insurance coverage from approved insurers, underscoring these measures as crucial for creating a livable and sustainable Lagos.
The General Manager of LASEPA, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, in his opening remarks, highlighted the importance of efficient chemical management in industrial and economic growth.
He raised concerns about issues such as food fraud, fake products, and unregulated mixing of chemicals, which he said posed significant threats to public health and the environment.
Dr. Ajayi pointed out that tightening chemical regulations and enhancing compliance are necessary to address these challenges effectively.
He described the workshop as a critical step towards modernizing chemical management practices, ensuring hazardous substances are handled responsibly, and promoting adherence to both the State and international safety standards.
While reaffirming LASEPA’s commitment to strict monitoring and enforcement, including granting chemical access to only licensed individuals or organizations with adequate safety measures in place.
LASEPA former General Manager, Engr Antonio who made a technical presentation on the regulators perspective on Current Trends in Chemical Handling & Warehousing ( Best Practices) said regulations serve as the legal framework that governs operations, outlining the responsibilities of facilities and individuals involved.
He noted that Facilities tasked with chemical storage are expected to adhere strictly to those regulations, adding that , “chemicals should be stored in a well-organized manner, with careful consideration for their nature and compatibility.
He enlightened that incompatible chemicals should not be stored together, as it could lead to dangerous reactions.
Engr Antonio explained that the conditions under which chemicals are stored must also be considered. According to him, some chemicals required cooler environments, while others need well-ventilated spaces, noting that, Ignoring these guidelines could lead to hazardous incidents, including costly explosions or fires.

Prof Kelechi Njoku from University of Lagos shared academic perspective on Current Trends in Chemical Handling & Warehousing (Best Practices) , urging the stakeholders to be safety conscious as negligence may lead to loss of lives properties

efforts in addressing anomalies in the chemical sector.
He noted that with the input and collaboration of regulatory bodies, progress is being made to ensure things are in order and aligned with expectations.

The workshop concluded with an award ceremony, recognizing exemplary Chemical Handling Practices.
