
Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security Research (FMAFS) recently led a delegation to meet with Prof. Dr. Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal at FGV – Fundacao Getulio Vargas, on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Rio de Janeiro. This significant encounter presented an opportunity for FMAFS to deepen its understanding of FGV, foster mutual relationships, explore potential collaborations, and discuss shared interests.
The area of discussion between the Nigerian delegation led by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security Research (FMAFS) and Prof. Dr. Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal at FGV – Fundacao Getulio Vargas, on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Rio de Janeiro, includes:
– The Green Imperative Project (GIP): A landmark international agricultural technology transfer project designed by FGV Europe with Deutsche Bank’s support. This project aims to promote sustainable agriculture practices and enhance food security in Nigeria.
– Agricultural Cooperation: Exploring avenues for collaboration between Nigeria and Brazil to improve agricultural productivity, research, and development. This includes sharing knowledge, expertise, and resources to address common agricultural challenges.
– Agricultural Technology Transfer: Discussing ways to transfer Brazilian agricultural technology to Nigeria, focusing on irrigation systems, precision agriculture, and crop management.
– Capacity Building: Enhancing the capacity of Nigerian agricultural researchers, extension agents, and farmers through training and workshops. This will help to improve the adoption and dissemination of new agricultural technologies ¹.
– Trade and Investment: Exploring opportunities for trade and investment between Nigeria and Brazil in the agricultural sector. This includes discussing market access, trade policies, and investment incentives ¹.
– Research and Development: Collaborating on research and development projects to address common agricultural challenges, such as climate change, soil degradation, and pest management.
Hon. Abiodun Yinusa, Special Assistant to the President, and the Permanent Secretary of FMAFS, were among the prominent attendees. The meeting facilitated fruitful discussions on crucial issues, paving the way for strengthened bilateral ties between Nigeria and Brazil ¹.
The G20 Rio de Janeiro Summit, hosted by Brazil, brought together leaders from around the world to address pressing global challenges. The summit tackled key priorities, including alleviating Global hunger and poverty, investing in clean energy, and ensuring greater economic participation for at-risk communities ² ³.
