Ipakodo Development Association has commenced its 2024 Ipakodo Day celebrations with a traditional Woro/Cultural Procession, held on Monday, September 30, 2024. The procession began at the residence of Oba Bashiru Sotonwa, Sekumade of Ipakodo Kingdom, and proceeded to the residence of late Prince Tajudeen Odofin, where the entourage was warmly received by his family and finally at the Palace of Sekumade of Ipakodo Kingdom.
The Sekumade of Ipakodo Kingdom, Oba Bashiru Sotonwa, emphasized the importance of unity and peace in the community during the kingdom’s annual festival. In his remarks, Oba Sotonwa highlighted the significance of “Woro,” a traditional notification system that brings the community together, regardless of tribe or religion.
According to Oba Sotonwa, “Woro” serves as a publicity tool, awakening the community to the upcoming celebration. Unlike modern invitation methods, “Woro” ensures everyone is informed and included.
Oba Sotonwa expressed his expectations for the one-week celebration, hoping residents would gather to show their loyalty and economic progress. He stressed that peace is essential, stating, “Once you have peace, you have everything.” Notably, cultism and killings have decreased significantly in the area.
Prince Olasunkanmi Shotonwa, Chairman of the Ipakodo Development Association, addressed the gathering, highlighting the significance of the celebration. “Today marks the beginning of our week-long program, and we’re recognizing Prince Tajudeen Odofin, who was with us last year but he’s now late. We’re paying homage to him at his premises,” Prince Shotonwa explained.
The week-long celebration is packed with various activities aimed at promoting unity, cultural heritage, and community development. Prince Shotonwa outlined the schedule, stating, “Tomorrow, we’ll provide free medical services for all residents at the palace. On Wednesday, we’ll unveil the projects undertaken by Prince Tajudeen Odofin at the primary school, followed by care for the aged in conjunction with TAO Foundation.”
Additionally, market women, artisans, and diverse associations will pay homage at the palace on Thursday, culminating in “Ijoko Agba” – a royal dance and music live band performance for those above 60. The celebration will continue with a thanksgiving service at the mosque on Friday.
The grand finale is scheduled for Saturday at Ipakodo Ferry Terminal at 11 am. Prince Shotonwa extended an invitation to all sons and daughters of Ipakodo, particularly those residing outside Nigeria, to return home and contribute to the community’s development, emulating the legacy of Prince Tajudeen Odofin.
