In commemoration of the 2024 International Youth Day, the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Itire-Ikate Local Branch, hosted a sensitization program against drug abuse. The event, themed “Make Health Your ‘New High’ Without Drugs,” aimed to educate youths on the dangers of substance abuse and promote healthy lifestyles.
Comrade Oshodi John, Coordinator of NYCN Itire-Ikate Local Branch, emphasized the importance of the campaign. “The battle against drug abuse is not a distant fight; it’s a battle within our streets, our schools, and sometimes, even our homes,” he said.
Comrade John challenged the youths to rethink their choices and habits, embracing a life of purpose, health, and resilience. “Let us not forget that the future belongs to those who are willing to fight for it,” he said. “Every young person here has the potential to lead, innovate, and inspire, but that potential can only be realized when we choose health over addiction.”
The Sensitization sought to build a culture of strength, where youths seek elevation of their minds, bodies, and spirits without resorting to drugs. Comrade John charged the attendees to become ambassadors of the anti-drug message, spreading awareness and promoting healthy lifestyles within their communities.
“The journey to a drug-free society starts with each of us, and today, we have taken a bold step in the right direction,” he concluded.
Representatives from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) a partner of the event, warning youths about the devastating effects of drug abuse. They urged the youthful audience to stay away from drugs, emphasizing that substance abuse only leads to harm and offers no benefits.
This event marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to combat substance abuse among Nigerian youths. By empowering young people with knowledge and encouraging healthy choices, the NYCN aims to foster a brighter, drug-free future for generations to come.
