The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has commenced a week-long water safety class and swimming training for pupils in public schools in the Bariga/Somolu Local Government. This initiative, tagged “Lagos Water Savvy Kids Program,” aims to instill water confidence in school children and reduce water phobia among Lagosians.

In partnership with the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and Dolphin Swim School (DSS), LASWA seeks to equip pupils with theoretical and practical knowledge on waterways safety, swimming skills, and basic survival techniques in emergency situations. This year’s edition has selected 50 students from five public schools in the Bariga/Somolu axis to participate in the training.

The program’s objective is to empower school children who use the waterways to be more confident, safety-conscious, and self-reliant in emergency situations. By catching them young, LASWA hopes to reduce water-related accidents and promote a culture of water safety among Lagosians.

The “Lagos Water Savvy Kids Program” is an annual advocacy program by LASWA, and this edition marks its 4th year. With the support of SUBEB and DSS, LASWA is committed to making water safety a priority for school children in Lagos State.
