The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Lagos Central District, celebrated International Youth Day 2024 with a highly impactful event that focused on empowering young people to harness digital tools for sustainable development.

The event featured a keynote address by Ayodeji Rilwan Tinubu, former Secretary of the NYCN Lagos State Chapter, who delivered an inspiring speech on the topic, “From Click to Progress: Youth Digital Pathway for Sustainable Development.”

Speaking virtually to an audience of engaged youths, Ayodeji Rilwan Tinubu emphasized the pivotal role that young people play in driving sustainable development. “We, as the youth, can lead the charge towards sustainable development, which is about meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own,” Ayodeji stated, challenging the youth to take active roles in shaping a sustainable future.

Ayodeji highlighted the significant digital transformation that Nigeria has witnessed over the past decade, noting how digital tools have become indispensable in various sectors critical to sustainable development. He explored the multifaceted roles that digital technology plays in areas such as Education and Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Civic Engagement and Advocacy, Agriculture and Food Security, and Environmental Protection and Climate Action.

During his address, Ayodeji also provided key recommendations for fostering a sustainable digital future. These include Investment in Digital Infrastructure: To ensure widespread access to digital tools and resources. Digital Literacy and Education: Empowering youth with the necessary skills to thrive in a digital world. Support for Innovation and Startups: Encouraging entrepreneurial ventures that leverage technology for societal benefit. Promotion of Inclusive Policies: Ensuring that digital opportunities are accessible to all, regardless of background. Cybersecurity Awareness: Protecting digital spaces and users from threats that could undermine progress.

Concluding his speech, Ayodeji urged the youth to critically explore and leverage the digital space for both societal advancement and personal development. “The future is digital, and it is in our hands. Let’s use this powerful tool not only for our own growth but also for the betterment of our society.”
