In a bid to consolidate on its current gains and build a more resilient Lagos, the Lagos State Government has announced plans to host an all-inclusive Sustainability Summit. The summit, scheduled for September 12, 2024, at the Eko Hotel and Suites, is a collaborative effort between the Lagos State Office of Sustainability, LASEPA, and the Lagos State Safety Commission.

According to Dr. Oreoluwa Finih, Special Adviser to Governor Sanwo-Olu on SDGs, the summit is a further demonstration of the state government’s strong commitment to sustainability and its desire for innovative solutions to addressing health, safety, and environmental challenges. “The state government’s vision for development is basically an SDG Agenda,” she noted.

The summit’s theme, “Building a Resilient and Sustainable Lagos,” serves as a call to action and a roadmap guiding government efforts to build a city that is prosperous, equitable, and environmentally sound. “Our policies and initiatives are focused on tackling pressing environmental issues and promoting sustainable practices,” Dr. Finih added.

Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, General Manager, LASEPA, emphasized the urgent need for effective environmental policies to secure Lagos’ future. He stressed the importance of regulating industrial emissions, maintaining a carbon registry, data sharing, and ensuring that commercial activities do not contribute to air pollution in the overall interest of the public.

The forthcoming Lagos Sustainability Summit will provide a vital platform to advance discussions on sustainable development and reinforce Lagos’ role as a leader in building a resilient urban environment. The event is expected to bring together stakeholders from various sectors to share ideas and expertise on building a safer, neater, and environmentally sustainable Lagos.
