Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area (LCDA) joined the global community in celebrating World Breastfeeding Week with an enlightenment program and free health services for nursing mothers and Elderly Citizens.

The event, held at the Senator Bayo Osinowo Hall, featured lectures and discussions on the importance of breastfeeding, proper breastfeeding techniques, and the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding for mothers and babies.

Dr. Dayo Olajide, Permanent Secretary of Health District 2, emphasized the importance of exclusive breastfeeding, She encouraged nursing mothers to prioritize proper breastfeeding practices, including exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and continued breastfeeding up to one to two years.

Dr. Olajide highlighted the challenges of exclusive breastfeeding and emphasized the need for community support, particularly from family members and husbands. She also stressed the importance of proper latching techniques, good nutrition for mothers, and avoiding mixed feeding in the first six months.

According to Dr. Olajide, the Lagos State Government is conducting similar programs across the state, educating mothers and community members on proper breastfeeding measures to ensure the health and well-being of infants.

The Permanent Secretary commended the Mayoress, Princess Samiat Bada, for her tireless efforts in improving the health sector, particularly the ongoing construction of a state-of-the-art health center.

The Chairperson of Ikosi Isheri LCDA, Mrs Muyibat Balogun, represented by the Supervisor for Health Hon. Yemi Ogunbadejo stated the importance of ensuring the health and nutrition of mothers, newborns, children, and adolescents to secure a brighter future.

She commended the First Lady of Lagos State, Dr (Mrs) Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, for her tireless efforts in promoting maternal and child health.

The chairperson highlighted the benefits of breastfeeding, including providing essential nutrients and emotional bonding for infants, and reducing the risk of diseases for mothers.

She expressed gratitude to the Mayoress of Ikosi-Isheri, Princess Samiat Abolanle Bada, and community members for their support and engagement in advancing maternal and child health.

Mrs Balogun concluded by pledging to uphold the rights and dignity of every individual, especially the most vulnerable, and harnessing collaboration, innovation, and advocacy to drive positive change. She appreciated the attendees for their commitment to the health and well-being of the community.

Dr. Okunade Adebayo, Medical Officer of Health for Ikosi-Isheri LCDA, emphasized the significance of World Breastfeeding Week, stressing its importance from the WHO to the local government level.

He highlighted the numerous benefits of breastfeeding for both mothers and children, including enhanced child health and development, easy and affordable nutrition, reduced risk of illnesses in mothers, and contribution to a healthy society.

Dr. Adebayo noted that breastfeeding provides essential knowledge and nutrients for children, making it crucial for their growth and development. He encouraged mothers to breastfeed, citing its advantages over formula feeding. “The benefits of breastfeeding cannot be overstated. It’s essential for the health and well-being of both mothers and children. We urge all mothers to prioritize breastfeeding for a healthier society,” Dr. Adebayo said.

Mrs. Okole Ifeoma and Owoyelu Modinat commended the the First Lady of Lagos State and the Mayoress for organizing the enlightenment program, which has empowered them with new knowledge on breastfeeding. They acknowledged that the event has filled the gaps in their understanding of breastfeeding, enabling them to make informed decisions.

Similarly, Aishat Adebayo and Abolaji Afusat thanked Governor Sanwo-Olu and Princess Samiat Bada for the free health program, which has provided them with the opportunity to check their health status and receive free medication. They appreciated the government’s efforts in promoting the health and well-being of its citizens.
