The Office of the Senate Leader has issued a statement dismissing recent social media campaigns against Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, CON, as “campaigns of calumny”. The statement, released by the Directorate of Media and Public Affairs, notes that some individuals have either misconstrued or willfully distorted the Majority Leader’s role, falsely portraying him as a power manipulator, enemy of the people, and obstacle to national peace.

According to the statement, Senator Bamidele’s duties, as outlined in the Senate Standing Orders, 2023 (as amended), include leading government bills, managing the legislative schedule, and liaising with Committee Chairmen. The statement highlights that these responsibilities are not unique to Nigeria, but are global best practices in democracies worldwide.

The statement emphasizes that Senator Bamidele has been fulfilling his duties creditably, successfully managing floor debates, building consensus across political divides, and mobilizing support for government bills within the Senate. Since assuming office on July 4, 2023, he has deployed strategies to navigate complex legislative procedures, advancing government bills and coordinating closely with the Executive Arm to ensure alignment with the administration’s policies and priorities.

The statement concludes that Senator Bamidele remains committed to serving Nigeria and Nigerians, and will never act against the nation’s core interests. His role has been pivotal in advancing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda through the National Assembly, and he has played this role well through strategic planning, negotiation, and leadership skills.

The Office of the Senate Leader urged the public to disregard the misinformation and smear campaigns, and to focus on the Senator’s achievements and contributions to the nation.
