In commemoration of World Youth Skills Day, the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Ikorodu branch organized a training program that equipped young individuals with skills in graphics design, soap making, and gele tying, providing them with creative and entrepreneurial tools to enhance their potential and contribute to the nation’s development.

Hon. Wasiu Adeshina, Chairman Ikorodu Local Government represented by the Vice Chairman Princess Folashade Olabanji-Oba, she addressed the youths, urging them to continually improve themselves.

She acknowledged the youths’ potential as future leaders and praised their desire to be better. Olabanji-Oba encouraged them to strive for excellence, emphasizing that personal growth and development are key to achieving their goals.

She expressed her optimism for their future, praying that the youths of tomorrow will be even better than they are today.

Comr. Ogunsanmi Basit, the Coordinator of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Ikorodu branch, delivered a speech in which he stated that the organization of the training program was a commemoration of World Youth Skills Day, aimed at empowering and appreciating the youth during this period.

He acknowledged the economic struggles faced by some youth but expressed belief in their potential to achieve greatness with the right skills and support. He expressed gratitude to the Local Government Chairman for his guidance and support, describing him as a father figure. The training program marks the beginning of various projects and programs focused on upskilling and supporting Ikorodu youth.

Comr. Basit encouraged participants to put their new skills into practice, emphasizing the importance of youth development for a brighter future.

Comr. Biliamin Oba, immediate past chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Lagos, has encouraged young people to embrace skills training and appreciate the value of mentorship.

Speaking to Ikorodu youths, Oba shared his personal experience, noting that the skills he acquired through his parents’ guidance have helped him become a better person today. He emphasized that the training may seem difficult, but it becomes appreciated later.

Oba urged the youth to take advantage of programs like the NYCN’s skills training, as it could become handy in the future. He also advised against recycling the same set of youth in government programs, instead of allowing others to benefit.

He stressed the need for follow-up and creating an enabling environment for young people to practice their skills and train others. Oba encouraged the youth to acquire multiple skills to be sustainable and prayed for their success.

Comr. Asoro Abubakri Olatunji, Vice-Chairman, Lagos East, National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), has commended the Ikorodu Local Branch for organizing a skills acquisition program to commemorate World Youth Skills Day.

Speaking at the event, Olatunji noted that the program is part of a statewide initiative, with 50 volunteer organizations participating across Lagos. He emphasized the importance of skills training in addressing unemployment and social vices among youths.

The program has empowered participants with skills in soap making, ghillie making, logo design, and graphic design, enabling them to brand their businesses and become self-sufficient.

He commended the organizers and encouraged the participants to utilize their newfound skills to access job opportunities. He acknowledged the need for skilled individuals to fit into job openings and promised that the NYCN will continue to drive programs like this at the local and state levels.

Toba Dosunmu, President of the Ikorodu Student Association, commended NYCN Ikorodu Local Branch for the one-day skill acquisition program, describing it as a “great initiative”.

Dosunmu expressed his delight at seeing students from various schools in attendance, learning new skills and gaining valuable knowledge. He shared his personal experience, stating that he, too, had benefited from the program, unlearning and relearning valuable lessons.
