Ikorodu North LCDA Chairman, Builder Deola Banjo, Urges Residents to embrace Tree Planting for a Sustainable Future.

Builder Deola Banjo, emphasized the importance of nurturing the future through tree planting.

Banjo quoted Warren Buffet, saying, “Someone is sitting under a tree today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” He stressed the need for intentionality in planting trees and keeping greens around us, highlighting the benefits of tree planting, which includes ensuring a sustainable future.

He encouraged residents to rededicate themselves to the practice of planting trees, emphasizing that the trees we enjoy today were planted by someone in the past. He urged residents to reflect on what seeds they want to plant to nurture their own future.

He also emphasized the need to be mindful of our actions, behavior, and attitude towards each other and the environment, as these will determine the kind of future we nurture. He prayed that residents would be architects of a beautiful and prosperous future.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, represented by Mrs Alimi Abiola, highlighted the challenges facing the state, including improper waste disposal, blocked drainages, indiscriminate tree cutting, noise and air pollution, and poor sanitation habits.

He emphasized that these issues threaten the environment, economy, and livelihood of residents, with far-reaching consequences for public health and safety.

He commended LASPARK’s efforts in creating vibrant urban green spaces, enhancing the quality of life for all residents. He commended the agency’s staff, led by Adetoun Popoola, for their dedication to environmental conservation.

He stated that trees are a vital component of the environment, regulating the climate, preventing soil erosion, protecting biodiversity, and enhancing resilience to climate impacts. He encouraged residents to plant at least one tree in their lifetime, nurture it, and teach their children about environmental stewardship.

However, the commissioner emphasized the need for collective action, urging every Lagosian to join the effort. He encouraged residents to take ownership of their environment and develop better habits to protect the planet’s health.
