
Barr. Moyosore Ogunlewe, Executive Chairman of Kosofe Local Government, commemorated the annual tree planting day by reaffirming the council’s dedication to combating environmental degradation caused by climate change.
The Chairman was represented by his Vice Chairman, Hon. Oluwole Shosanya, emphasized the importance of tree planting in combating climate change, regulating the atmosphere, and ensuring a greener future. He acknowledged the efforts of the Lagos State Government in tackling climate change and urged residents to embrace tree planting and nurturing.
The chairman praised the government’s commitment to environmental restoration through the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources and LASPARK. He noted that the constant reminders and sensitization by LASPARK have changed people’s mindsets, making them believe in the importance of tree planting.
Ogunlewe reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to using tree planting as a tool for regeneration, renewal, and rebirth, aiming for a healthier and greener Kosofe and Lagos State.
He implored the residents to imbibe the culture of tree planting and nurturing for the benefits of humanity, emphasizing the need to protect and preserve nature for future generations.
Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, represented by Mrs. Oluwakemi Onatunde, highlighted the challenges facing the state, including improper waste disposal, blocked drainages, indiscriminate tree cutting, noise and air pollution, and poor sanitation habits.
He emphasized that these issues threaten the environment, economy, and livelihood of residents, with far-reaching consequences for public health and safety.
The commissioner praised LASPARK’s efforts in creating vibrant urban green spaces, enhancing the quality of life for all residents. He commended the agency’s staff, led by Adetoun Popoola, for their dedication to environmental conservation. He noted that trees are a vital component of the environment, regulating the climate, preventing soil erosion, protecting biodiversity, and enhancing resilience to climate impacts. He encouraged residents to plant at least one tree in their lifetime, nurture it, and teach their children about environmental stewardship.
However, the commissioner emphasized the need for collective action, urging every Lagosian to join the effort. He encouraged residents to take ownership of their environment and develop better habits to protect the planet’s health.
Mrs. Dorris Chimeze, an Environmental officer outlined the process of planting trees, she explained that site selection is crucial in determining the type of tree to be planted, adding that the trees must be carefully selected to avoid damage to surrounding structures.
She revealed that the trees selected for planting in Kosofe Local Government, including Acarnivore Red, Queen’s Palm, and Dracaena Red, were chosen based on their fast growth rate, low maintenance value, and medicinal properties.
She also stressed the importance of maintaining the planted trees, noting that tree planting is an ongoing process that extends beyond the ceremonial planting day.
She highlighted the significance of tree planting in Lagos City, particularly in controlling global warming and mitigating the effects of climate change. She emphasized that tree planting is crucial in coastal states like Lagos, where environmental conservation is essential.
