The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and Airqo set to host a 5-day Clean Air Forum in Lagos State from July 8-12, 2024. The forum aims to address air pollution issues in Africa and establish a policy framework for improved air quality on the continent.
Over 350 participants from 40 countries will attend, including policymakers, civil society representatives, the private sector, and scientific communities.
The forum, organized by LASEPA in partnership with AirQo and hosted by the Air Quality Monitoring Research Group (AQMRG) and EUEPiN from the University of Lagos, will focus on knowledge sharing and collaborations to strengthen regional networks for clean air interventions in African cities.
The gathering seeks to explore innovative solutions for air quality management, develop partnerships, enhance skills, and expand professional networks to address the significant impact of air pollution in Africa.
A study from the Global Burden of Disease revealed that air pollution causes approximately 1.1 million deaths annually in Africa, making it the second leading cause of death on the continent due to rapid urbanization and industrialization. Professor Engineer Bainomugisha emphasized the urgency of championing clean air in Africa’s urban areas and highlighted the forum’s role in promoting air quality management and raising awareness of air pollution for better health outcomes in Africa.
LASEPA’s General Manager, Dr. Tunde Ajayi, emphasized the importance of environmental control for sustainable growth in Lagos State, aligning with the government’s development agenda.
He stressed the need for collaboration with global experts to address climate change, pollution, and other environmental challenges affecting public health. Ajayi encouraged participation in the Clean Air Forum to engage in discussions on improving air quality in Africa for a healthier population.
He urged people to get registered for participation in the Clean air forum through the link:https://www.airqo.net/clean-air/forum#schedule.
