To foster grassroots sports development and community engagement, the office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports, in collaboration with ACAN a (USA-based sports company), the Lagos State Sports Commission, and the Lagos State Basketball Association, organized a one-day basketball clinic titled I CAN DO SPORTS on June 15, 2024, at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Complex, Rowe Park Sports Centre, Yaba, Lagos.

The event was led by Aloysius Anagonye, a Nigerian-American former professional basketball player who represented Nigeria at the 2006 FIBA World Championship and the 2007 FIBA Africa Championship.

The clinic aimed to empower young athletes and elevate coaching standards within the state by offering valuable training opportunities and promoting essential life skills and professional development.

Over 30 coaches and sports administrators attended the program, along with more than 100 basketball players aged 6 to 25 for the practical sessions. Experts in body exercise provided guidance on proper exercise techniques to prevent injuries and post-retirement health issues. Mr.

Muri Mustapha, owner of MGL Training Centre in the USA, emphasized the importance of the right exercise mentality before engaging in basketball.

Mr. Damilare Orimoloye, the SSA on Sports to the Governor, expressed gratitude to Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for creating an enabling environment for sports development.

He encouraged participants to stay committed to their careers and assured them of the Lagos State Government’s continued support in developing basketball players and coaches through more programs.

The Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Lekan Fatodu also promised further collaboration with former international athletes to bring high-quality training to athletes and coaches in the future.
