
Earlier today, the Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS JCC LAGOS AXIS), Comrade Alimi Lekan Idris, paid a courtesy visit to the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr Bakare-Oki Olalekan. The meeting was highly productive and focused on several vital issues that significantly impact students in Lagos State. The discussion covered a broad range of topics aimed at improving traffic safety, student welfare, and fostering a collaborative relationship between NANS and LASTMA. Some of these key topics included:
Road Safety Education: Proposed collaborative programs to educate students about road safety, particularly those who commute daily.
Safe School Zones: Discussed measures to enhance safety around schools and campuses, such as better signage, speed bumps, and pedestrian crossings.
Internships and Volunteer Programs: Explored opportunities for students to gain practical experience by interning or volunteering with LASTMA to assist in traffic management.
Peak Hour Management: Addressed strategies for managing traffic congestion during peak hours, especially in areas with high student traffic.
Smart Traffic Solutions: Investigated the application of technology in traffic management, such as synchronized traffic lights, real-time traffic updates, and mobile apps for reporting issues.
Advocacy and Policy
Student Representation: Advocated for student involvement in the traffic policy-making process.
Emergency Plans: Discussed how LASTMA can support students during emergencies, such as accidents or natural disasters.
