He highlighted the significance of student unionism as a platform that can shape individuals positively or negatively based on their approach. He stressed the importance of understanding one’s purpose and motivation in joining the union, emphasizing values over monetary gains. He encouraged students to engage intellectually, strategize effectively, and take an active role in defining their objectives within the union.

He reflected on his personal journey and the impact of his involvement in student unionism, acknowledging that while his story may not be universal, it serves as inspiration for others.

Builder Daini recounted a significant event from his past, sharing a personal anecdote about his first encounter with the authorities during a protest in January 1997 at the age of 17. He vividly described the protest organized by the National Nigerian Labor Congress in Yaba, where he found himself amidst a crowd dispersing as the police approached. Daini recalled standing near Otunba Gani Adams during the rally, which included various groups like the OPC and the European Revolutionary Movement. His proximity to the leaders led to his arrest alongside them. Upon revealing his age as 17 at the police station, he was subjected to 24 strokes of the cane and a prolonged period of kneeling before being released. This experience left a lasting impact on Daini, fueling his determination to channel such adversities into a purposeful direction. Subsequently, upon gaining admission to the University of Lagos, he resolved to delve into student unionism as a proactive step towards shaping his future.

Builder Daini shared a compelling narrative from his past, revealing that he faced expulsion and imprisonment twice due to his involvement in student unionism. Despite these challenges, he expressed resilience and determination, emphasizing that his experiences have shaped his perspective on the importance of sacrifice and dedication in this field.

Drawing inspiration from Nelson Mandela’s story and the significance of prison experiences in South Africa, Daini highlighted the idea that one’s commitment and sacrifices in student unionism can influence their trajectory and impact within the movement. By reflecting on his own trials and perseverance, Daini encouraged others to consider the depth of their involvement and the potential outcomes based on the level of dedication they exhibit in student unionism.

In his closing remarks, Builder Olusesan Daini said despite facing expulsion and challenges, he returned determined, earning a BSc, 2 Masters, and soon a doctorate from the same University of Lagos. He emphasized the importance of perseverance in all circumstances.

He recounted a significant moment when the former VC, who had a role in his past rustication, honored him on behalf of the University with an Award of Honour after he became chairman. Daini urged fellow student unionists to reflect on their motives, advising them to define their vision and purpose beyond material gains for a meaningful impact in the student unionism realm.
