The first edition of the Mayoress Open Table Tennis Competition in Ikosi-Isheri LCDA has concluded on Worker’s Day, May 1st. with thrilling matches and outstanding performances in both the male and female categories. The tournament is organized by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Sports and the Mayoress of Ikosi-Isheri LCDA, aimed to showcase the talent and skills of the youths in the community.

In the male category, Ayanwale Jamiu from Ward E emerged as the champion, and securing the first position. Bello Ibrahim from Ward B claimed the second position, while Atunwon Quadri from Ward E and Oladejo Qudus from Ward A secured the third position.

In the female category, Odusanya Bose from Ward B clinched the first position. Okoli Melanin from Ward D secured the second position, while Adeniyi Sarah from Ward C claimed the third position.

Princess Samiat Bada the Mayoress of Ikosi-Isheri LCDA, expressed her enthusiasm, stating that this program is the first of its kind not only in Ikosi-Isheri but also across all Local Governments in Lagos State.

“We are proud to be pioneers in this endeavor,” Bada declared. “I want to express my gratitude to the SSA to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Sports for collaborating with us on this project.”



This is not the first time the LCDA has organized such events. Last year, they successfully hosted a boxing tournament, and this year, they are preparing for the second edition. Additionally, the LCDA has a dedicated football team that represents them in various competitions, with the LCDA providing training and support.

The latest addition to their sports initiatives is an indoor table tennis tournament, which commenced today. She expressed her satisfaction with the community’s response, noting their enthusiasm and appreciation for the efforts made by the LCDA. The residents have praised the peaceful and supportive environment in Ikosi-Isheri LCDA, considering it a wonderful place to live.

To further support the youth, the LCDA has established an ICT center, where 80 individuals are trained daily. She emphasized the importance of providing these opportunities to the youth, stating that they are not just the future, but also the present. The three-month program is offered free of charge, enabling the youth to acquire valuable skills.

“As I always tell them, an idle hand is a devil’s workshop,” Mayoress remarked, highlighting the LCDA’s commitment to keeping the youth engaged and productive.

She emphasized that a significant number of the youth in the area are graduates or are currently pursuing higher education and some of them are awaiting admission, the LCDA has implemented programs to keep them occupied, such as sports and ICT activities.

The focus on youth empowerment extends beyond mere engagement. Mayoress emphasized the LCDA’s commitment to supporting the Government’s efforts and the welfare of the workers. She acknowledged the hard work of the NULGE (Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees) and extended her warm wishes to all workers on International Workers’ Day.

Princess Samiat also took the opportunity to expressed her gratitude to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his support and dedication to all 57 local government areas in Lagos State. She also praised President Tinubu for his contributions, stating that his leadership has prevented crises in Nigeria.

She highlighted the importance of grassroots involvement in community programs. Princess Samiat emphasized that the local government has been at the forefront of infrastructure development, ensuring that the needs of the community are met.

She also acknowledged the role of Mr. Speaker in ensuring checks and balances in all local governments within Lagos State. This commitment to transparency and accountability has contributed to the success of the LCDA and its various initiatives.

She further expressed her dedication to the youth, promising to support them until their hands are occupied with meaningful activities. She encouraged them to dream big and aspire to become future leaders in positions such as President and Governor.

Damilare Orimoloye, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Sanwo-Olu on sports, shared his perspective on youth engagement in sports. As a resident of Ikosi-Isheri LCDA, he felt a strong sense of responsibility to initiate sports activities beyond just football. After conducting research, he decided to focus on table tennis as a means to develop and engage the youth in his community.

To his surprise, the response from the community was overwhelming. Over 90 participants registered for the competition, far surpassing the initial expectation of 20 participants for the first edition. This remarkable turnout is a testament to the love and support the community has for Princess Samiat Bada, the Mayoress of Ikosi-Isheri LCDA.

Initially planning to award prizes to the top three participants, Damilare was moved by the Mayoress’s kindness and generosity. She suggested extending the prizes to the top five or seven participants, further demonstrating her commitment to supporting and empowering the youth in the community. This first edition of the competition is just the beginning, with plans to hold subsequent editions every three months.

“The youth would have been out there engaging in all those social vices,” Orimoloye stated, “but they are here enjoying themselves, having fun, and cheering each other on. It speaks to our community, our togetherness. Our heart is where the community is, as our Mayoress’s slogan says.”

Orimoloye assured the youth that the Government is committed to their development and encouraged them to expect and prepare for the opportunities that lie ahead. “The Government will do everything in their power to extend this gesture to you,” he affirmed. “All you need to do is expect it, be prepared for it, and grab it when it comes. The opportunity will definitely come. The Government is not leaving you behind; you are called to be part of the development of the Local Government.”

Participants applauded the Mayoress for her efforts in introducing various sports to the local government. This initiative not only provides entertainment but also empowers the youth to excel in their chosen fields.

“Ikosi-Isheri LCDA is truly a place where dreams can come true,” one of the participants expressed. “Thanks to the Mayoress, we have the chance to explore our potential and make our mark in the world of sports.”

The table tennis tournament is just one of the many sports programs organized by the LCDA under the Mayoress’s leadership. From boxing tournaments to a dedicated football team, the community has witnessed remarkable growth and development in the area of sports.
