
National Youth Council of Nigeria Lagos Central and National Youth Council of Nigeria Lagos Island Local Branch hosted the first edition of the PAD A GIRLS PROJECT with the theme “Exploring Potential.” The event aimed to address the importance of menstrual hygiene and empower women to live healthier lives. In addition to the pad given to them, the pack also entails other cleaning materials to make them clean, and inclusion of Certificate of participation.
Comrade Teslim Olusi, the Coordinator of Lagos Island Local Branch, During his opening speech highlighted the significance of men understanding the dynamics of women’s menstrual cycles and providing support.
He emphasized that as brothers, husbands, and boyfriends, it is crucial to educate ourselves about menstrual hygiene to assist the women in our lives.
The program featured expert speakers who shared valuable insights on managing hygiene during menstrual periods. Participants were provided with essential items including sanitary towels (pads), hand sanitizers, and antiseptic soaps to enhance their sanitary hygiene practices.
Comrade Teslim Olusi also encouraged the youth to support one another and strive for collective success. The event aimed to inspire participants to explore their potentials and make a positive impact in their communities.
Princess Tolu Akinlagun Sholarin, the founder of the Girl Child Initiative, expressed her heartfelt appreciation for today’s program, the PAD A GIRLS PROJECT. She enthusiastically shared her joy in being a part of this important initiative, as it addresses the long-standing issue of stigmatization surrounding menstruation.
Princess Tolu highlighted the unfortunate reality that girls have often faced ridicule and discomfort when they are stained during their menstrual cycles. This has led to many girls feeling hesitant to speak out about their experiences.
She commend the National Youth Council of Nigeria Lagos Central and Lagos Island Local Branch for deeming it fit to come up with such initiative.
Mrs. Ayekola Morenikeji, “this initiative marks the beginning of a grand advocacy among young girls menstrual hygiene. Tagged, “pad a girl”. It is a program where over 300 young girls precisely students are being trained on issues relating to sanitary hygiene.”
Comrade Biliamin Oba, Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Lagos Chapter, has emphasized the importance of adding value to our lives. He commended the efforts of NYCN Lagos Island Local Branch and Lagos Central for organizing a program that aims to create a better future for young people.
The NYCN’s initiative not only focuses on providing valuable training on leadership qualities but also encourages every local government youth council to participate. By coming together and sharing knowledge, these young individuals are being equipped to become better leaders and contribute to a brighter tomorrow.
