The 5th edition of the Mo’Care Meranda Charity Foundation Basketball summer camp tournament concluded yesterday, with great success. In the Under 16 category, several young talents stood out for their exceptional performances. Ezikel Alagbe was recognized as the Best Assistant, Ayo Lambo showcased his prowess as the Highest Rebounder, Sale Emmanuel emerged as the Highest Scorer, Prosper Godspower was acknowledged as the Discipline player.

In the Under 12 category, another group of promising players made their mark. Wamber was celebrated as the Highest Scorer, Chukwuka Onyeka was recognized as the Best Defensive Player, Seyi Olutoye’s outstanding performance as the Highest Offensive Rebounder was acknowledged, Roi Wilbaforce was named the Most Improved Player, Finally, Julius was crowned the Most Valuable Player (MVP), exemplifying exceptional skills, leadership, and impact on the court.

Engr. John Paul Meranda, the convener, and the witnessed an outstanding performance from the participating children in the 5th edition of the event. Notably, there was a noticeable improvement in their skills and gameplay, showcasing their dedication and progress over time.

Engr. John Paul Meranda expressed his joy in witnessing their growth and development in the game. Looking ahead, he envisions expanding the tournament to include 20 teams across different categories in the upcoming editions, scheduled for the 6th, 12th, 13th, and even the 19th.

Engr. Meranda emphasized that the tournament has been a self-sponsored initiative thus far, driven by his passion for the game and the desire to provide opportunities for young players. However, he acknowledged the importance of securing sponsors and grants to further expand the tournament’s structure and impact.

Engr. John Paul Meranda expressed his hope that they will join in the future editions, understanding that the circumstances in Nigeria can sometimes pose challenges. He extended his appreciation to those who made the effort to attend, particularly those who self-funded their participation. As a gesture of gratitude, Engr. John Paul Meranda provides logistical support to help them return to their communities after the games.

Rep. Moshood Kayode Akiolu, member of the House of Representatives for Lagos Island constituency 2, He believes that the skills displayed by the young athletes in the sports event are on par with professionals in the NBA.

Rep. Akiolu also highlighted the importance of looking inward and recognizing the potential of sports in Nigeria. He mentioned how schools abroad offer scholarships to talented young athletes, emphasizing the need for similar opportunities in Nigeria.

During a discussion with Chairperson Madam Harper, Rep. Akiolu explored ways to support and promote sports. They identified the need for encouragement and sponsorship. In fact, Rep. Akiolu mentioned that there will soon be a law requiring a certain percentage of corporate social responsibility (CSR) or revenue to be allocated towards sports development.

Hon. Muibi Folawiyo, Chairman of Lagos Island East, expressed his enthusiasm for the basketball competition, describing it as a “golden gift” for the children during the Christmas and New Year season. He noted the excitement and happiness that the sport brings, highlighting the positive impact it has on the community. While some children may engage in negative activities during the festive period, Hon. Muibi Folawiyo emphasized that sports, like basketball, provide a constructive outlet for young people.

Hon. Muibi Folawiyo also revealed the administration’s interest in partnering with the Mo’Care Meranda Charity Foundation for future editions of the competition.

Hon. Sulaimon Afinni, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Lagos Island constituency 2, understands the importance of providing opportunities for kids to stay engaged and occupied. He acknowledges that not everyone can excel in popular sports like football or table tennis, which are already quite saturated.

By diversifying the sports options available to young individuals, we can tap into their unique skills and interests. This encourages them to pursue a path that aligns with their passions and talents, ultimately leading to personal growth and potential career opportunities.

Mrs. Barbara Atinuke, the Chairman of the Basketball Association, expressed her enthusiasm about an upcoming event in her Hometown Lagos Island, She described the event as a delightful occasion, emphasizing the importance of focusing on specific categories of children: “Catching them young.”

Coach Ayinla Johnson, former national captain and Associate head coach with D’Tigers, expressed his admiration for the level of talent displayed.

Coach Johnson commended Engr. Gbadebo and his wife for organizing such a remarkable gathering. He emphasized the importance of grassroots development in nurturing future basketball stars. “Everything starts from the grassroots,” Coach Johnson stated, “and I’m impressed with their performance.”

Having witnessed the players’ performance firsthand, Coach Johnson acknowledged that he had seen individuals who possess even greater potential than himself. He expressed his belief that among the talented youngsters, there may be future basketball legends like Hakeem Olajuwon. While they may not be as tall at the moment, their youth and dedication are promising signs for their basketball journey.

Agboola Pinero, a former national basketball coach, “Big thank you to the sponsor,” Pinero said, “because basketball is dying in Lagos State. If individuals are trying to bring it up, we should be grateful to them.” He recognized that not all young kids who participate in basketball will pursue it as a career, but emphasized the positive impact the sport can have on their education and future prospects.

Pinero highlighted the role of basketball in providing educational opportunities for young athletes. “Basketball has its part to play towards education,” he explained. “The motto ‘learning of any child comes through physical exercise,’ and basketball is a part of it. Through basketball, you can earn scholarships for future education.”

While emphasizing the importance of education, Pinero advised children to prioritize education over sports. He encouraged them to pursue their dreams and aspirations, whether it be in basketball or any other field. “I will advise children that education should come before sports,” Pinero stated. “And where the two can marry, good luck to them.”

The Mo’Care Meranda Charity Foundation also awarded; Hon. Moshood Kayode Akiolu, a member of the House of Representatives for Lagos Island 2, Hon. Mojisola Meranda, the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, and Hon. Sulaimon Afinni, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly for Lagos Island 2, Mayor Muibi Folawiyo, the Chairman of Lagos Island East, Mayor Kamal Bashua, the former Chairman of Lagos Island East, Mrs. Barbara Atinuke, the Chairman of the Basketball Association, Coach Ayinla John, the former coach of the Tigers, and Mr. Agboola, the former Nigeria Basketball Coach, were all acknowledged for their incredible support for the organization.
