… Ensuring safety and security on Lagos Inland Waterways

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), the Nigerian Navy, Western Naval Command, in collaboration with Marine Police, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire Service (LSFS), Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), and other emergency responder agencies, earlier today carried out a comprehensive Joint Marine Search and Rescue Simulation Exercise.
The main purpose of this exercise was to test and validate the readiness of these agencies when it comes to responding to marine emergencies. By conducting this simulation exercise, they wanted to ensure that they are well-prepared and equipped to handle any potential emergencies that may occur along the Lagos Inland Waterways.
Mr. Seun Osiyemi, the Commissioner for Transportation Lagos State, represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in his speech the significance of a joint simulation search and rescue exercise was emphasized. The collaborative exercise brought together various organizations to enhance preparedness and response capabilities in the face of emergencies and disasters.
Addressing the audience, Mr. Osiyemi expressed his pleasure in participating in the exercise, which aimed to foster unity and interoperability among organizations and communities. He highlighted the fact that emergencies and disasters know no boundaries, emphasizing the need for a well-coordinated, unified response.
The joint simulation exercise served as a platform to bring together diverse expertise, resources, and perspectives. By doing so, the capabilities of the involved organizations were strengthened, creating a formidable force capable of tackling complex and demanding scenarios that may arise.

In his speech, Mr. Damilola Emmanuel, the General Manager of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), highlighted the paramount importance of search and rescue simulation exercises. He expressed his gratitude and recognition to the Nigerian Navy (Western Naval Command), Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Marine Police, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Lagos State Fire Services, Lagos State Ambulance Services, and other emergency responders for their invaluable contributions.
Mr. Emmanuel emphasized that in a world where unforeseen emergencies and disasters can strike at any moment, the ability to respond swiftly and effectively is not just a capability but a necessity. Search and rescue simulations serve as invaluable tools in preparing emergency responders for the unpredictable challenges they may face in the field.

During his opening address, Rear Admiral Mustapha Bala Hassan, the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Nigerian Navy, highlighted the importance of collaboration in advancing Nigeria’s blue economy. He emphasized that this initiative aims to encourage Lagosians to shift their transportation focus from roads to water, reducing congestion. Rear Admiral Hassan also stressed the significance of implementing the strategies tested during the simulation and mentioned plans for 2024, including backup measures and financial support to sustain these efforts.
Dr. Bashir Jambo, the Director-General of NIMASA, expressed his strong support for the collaboration, stating that ensuring safety and security on our waterways is crucial for the success of the blue economy.
The Navy Chief also mentioned that they are planning to establish an offshore search and rescue operation base in collaboration with NIMASA. He also emphasized the importance of promoting the blue economy and encouraging Lagosians to embrace water transportation.
