Inspired Youth Network, in collaboration with ActionAid Nigeria, kicked off a three-day program yesterday, focused on Agroecology Training and the Planting of Trees for Economic and Climate Sustainability in Ijede LCDA. The program offers participants a unique opportunity to gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience on the farm.
The training, which commenced yesterday at Ijede Town Hall, aims to equip the community with sustainable agricultural practices and empower them to contribute to economic growth while mitigating the effects of climate change. By combining theoretical learning with hands-on experience, participants will be able to implement environmentally friendly farming techniques.
Dr. Sadiku Bukola, the representative for agricultural development in Lagos State, expressed her appreciation to ActionAid for organizing a valuable program as at this time in the country.
During the program, Dr. Sadiku Bukola emphasized the importance of addressing deforestation and the urgent need to plant more trees. She also highlighted the impact of climate change, which has led to flooding and disrupted farming activities in Nigeria. To mitigate these challenges, she stressed the significance of planting trees within our communities.
In her address, Dr. Sadiku Bukola encouraged the efficient use of available land in Lagos State for cultivating nutritious crops. She emphasized the practice of multiple cropping while being mindful of the land’s fertility. By rotating crops and allowing land to rest for a few years after harvesting, farmers can ensure sustained productivity.
The training program serves as a platform for participants to gain valuable insights and practical skills in agricultural practices. Dr. Sadiku Bukola’s expertise and guidance will undoubtedly contribute to the development of a thriving agricultural sector in Lagos State.
Azubuike Okoye, the Food Agriculture Program Manager for ActionAid Nigeria, highlighted the significance of their training program in supporting farmers and promoting sustainable agriculture. The program aims to maximize the potential of farmers’ land by equipping them with essential skills in crop cultivation and sustainable farming practices.
During the training, farmers will learn about soil and water conservation techniques, sustainable management practices to increase crop yield, and the benefits of intercropping. Azubuike emphasized the importance of reducing dependence on external chemicals and instead encouraged farmers to learn how to create their own compost manure.
Azubuike urged participants to actively engage in the training, apply their newfound knowledge, and ask questions for further clarification.
