The Association of Telephone, Cable TV, and Internet Subscribers of Nigeria (ATCIS) National President, Prince ‘Sina Bilesanmi, congratulated telecom subscribers on the passage of the Nigeria Data Protection Bill into law. The bill was signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, establishing the Nigeria Data Protection Commission to regulate the processing of personal information. The bill replaces the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB), which was established by former President Muhammadu Buhari in February 2022. The new law provides a legal framework for the protection of personal information and the practice of data protection in Nigeria.

Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau, announced the enactment of the bill at the NDPD Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan validation workshop in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. The bill was introduced to the Senate and House of Representatives for consideration and passage on Tuesday, 4 April 2023, via a letter from former President Buhari. The newly established Nigeria Data Protection Commission will be headed by a National Commissioner with the responsibility of regulating the processing of personal information.

Prince ‘Sina Bilesanmi expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his support in signing the bill into law. He noted that the bill’s passage is a significant milestone in the protection of personal information and the practice of data protection in Nigeria. ATCIS-Nigeria is a leading advocacy body with over 223 million telecom subscribers across the 36 states within six geo-political zones for non-Nigerians and Nigerians.
