•Kick against plunging Lagos into political, and security crisis

Election Observers on the platform of the National Observer Group (NOG) have adjudged the just concluded Governorship and State Assembly elections in Lagos State as a credible, transparent, free, fair, and gender-friendly election.

The group said the outcome of last Saturday’s gubernatorial poll, won by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the victories of House of Assembly candidates at constituency levels should be “happily accepted by all political parties and candidates as a true reflection of the people’s mandate.”

National Observer Group, a coalition of civil society groups that monitored the last elections in Lagos State, spoke on Monday during a press conference addressed by the group’s Coordinator and National Coordinator, Grassroot Mobiliser for Better Nigeria Initiative, Hon. Safiya Ibrahim Ogoh; Founder of Ayisat Gbajabiamila Foundation, representing Centre for Childcare and Youth Development, Hajia Ayisat Gbajabiamila and Leader of Global Policy Advocacy and Leadership Initiatives, Comrade Adewale Adeogun.

Speaking at the press conference, Ogoh said the outcome of last Saturday’s elections largely reflects the wishes and aspirations of Nigerians, who voted for candidates of their choice without hindrance.

“We wish to congratulate the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) for organising a free, fair, credible, and gender-sensitive election, and indeed all Nigerians for peacefully conducting themselves, which proved once again that the principle of ‘one man, one vote’ is now the norms in Africa’s biggest democracy,” she said.

She also commended the security agencies for conducting themselves professionally and with the utmost civility, thereby ensuring that elections took place and met international best practices.

Gbajabiamila urged those planning to plunge Lagos State into a political and security crisis to desist from it immediately before the law catches up with them, adding that political thuggery and cultism remain prohibited.

“Elections are not a do-or-die affair, politicians should always approach it with a high level of civility and patriotism. They should see themselves as part of the society they want to lead and must not destroy it with their ambition to lead or rule by all means,” she advised.

Comrade Adeogun, who described the outcome of Saturday’s election as a victory for democracy, commended Nigerians and Lagos residents in particular for performing their civic responsibilities during the last elections without fear, favour, intimidation, or any form of harassment.

He said: “We appreciate the Independent National Electoral Commission in Lagos State for remaining resolute and committed to conducting a credible, transparent, free, and fair Governorship and state Assembly elections in the State whose outcome has truly reflected the people’s mandate by being neutral and fair to all participating political parties.

“The Lagos State Governorship and State Assembly elections of March 18, 2023, took place as scheduled across the entire state under a peaceful atmosphere. We, therefore, adjudged the election to have met the international best practices of credible, transparent, free, fair, and gender-friendly elections.”

Impact of Lagos Blue and Red Line rail system on education sector ~Ajasa-Info

BY OWOLABI FALANA

As part of the efforts to combat problems of gridlock and wasted man-hours in Lagos, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu after his assumption into office on May 29, 2019, expressed his commitment to bring the Blue and Red Line projects to completion during his first term in office. In order to fulfil this promise and reach this milestone, our amiable governor was able to deliver this project and get it opened in December 2022, giving Lagosians a remarkable Christmas gift.

It is imperative to note that men will always make their own history in life, but they do not make it just as they please neither do they make it under circumstances chosen by themselves, but under circumstances directly encountered, given, and transmitted from the past.

In this instance, the vision of Governor Sanwo-Olu for a greater Lagos through the Lagos Blue and Red Line Rail project has resulted in the making of history at the Centre of Excellence, adding a significant step to his list of illustrious accomplishments.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the 15th governor of Lagos state has built on the legacy of his forebears in the highly sought-after position of the chief executive officer of the Centre of Excellence, creating history and breaking records in the process.

History has been made in Lagos state with the completion of the 13km electronic-powered Lagos Blue Line Rail Phase 1 Scheme (Marina to Mile 2) infrastructure, which was tested on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, and officially commissioned by President Muhammadu Buhari on January 24, 2023.

The Blue Line rail project of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit being constructed by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) 27-kilometre rail route designed to run from Okokomaiko eastwards to Mile 2 and then proceed to Marina via Ijora. The 13km of Phase One of the Blue Line rail project is fully ready for operation with five stations, which are Marina, National Theatre, Orile, Suru-Alaba, and Mile 2. The Phase Two of the project is from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko.

This project which is coming just exactly 120 years after the first tramway system was launched here in the city of Lagos in 1902 is expected to transport 250,000 passengers daily and, when completed, the entire 27km will transport about 500,000 passengers daily with each train comprising four coaches and each coach taking up to 180 passengers conveniently.

Given that Phase 1 of the Blue Line, which is the first segment of the network was supposed to be completed in 2011, but construction has been delayed due to a lack of funds and a change in government, there is no doubt that the start of this project’s operations last year sparked new hopes for an improved transportation experience. It is however expedient to remind us that the Lagos state government began talks with potential investors for the line’s operation and maintenance in May 2012.

Historically, the monumental idea of building a Rapid Transit System (RTS) in Lagos dated back to former Governor Lateef Jakande’s administration’s proposal of the Lagos Metroline network in 1983, as well as the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s significant reforms of the Lagos state transportation system that began in 1999 while he was the governor of the State.

In line with the aforementioned, traffic management and transportation, which is the first pillar of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s six pillars’ THEMES agenda, outlines his vision for an integrated transportation system and a multimodal transportation strategy that seamlessly brings together all the various transportation components which include road, rail, and water systems. It is therefore important to emphasise at this juncture that the fact that our working governor has accomplished so much since his assumption in office testifies to his love and enthusiasm for the socio-economic advancement of Lagos and its residents.

The governor understands that investing significantly in entrepreneurship skill development, innovation and creativity, public finance management, and human capital development is the one major way to realise the greater Lagos dream, more reason why education is also a key component of the THEMES agenda.

We have hundreds of our teachers, as well as many traders and business operators, coming from these border towns to work in Lagos, and with the completion of the Lagos Blue and Red Line Rail System, I believe that their disposable incomes and productivity will greatly increase and their stress levels drastically reduced to a bearable level. Additionally, students living near the axis will be able to commute freely and more quickly from and to their various educational institutions. As a result, this will significantly aid in the teaching and learning process and lead to better learning outcomes.

With this fantastic development and other notable initiatives to raise the standard of living for every Lagosian, Mr Sellable and our working governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwoolu has set a remarkable record for a greater Lagos and he is undoubtedly poised to do more. I think the Lagos state government under our amiable governor deserves a resounding clapping ovation for this unprecedented achievement.

Lagos East Rally: Senator Abiru Showcases Achievements; APC Members, Constituents Applaud Lawmaker ~Ajasa-Info

… Governor Sanwo-Olu, Abiru, Seek Support For All Candidates

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Industries and the Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Distinguished Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, FCA at the APC Lagos East Mega Rally today wowed constituents, members and supporters of the ruling party in the Lagos East Senatorial District with his sterling achievements in the last two years.

The #DoingGood Senator who addressed teeming members and supporters of the party at Ikorodu Town Hall, the venue of the mega rally enjoined electorate in Lagos East to re-elect him in 2023, stressing that he had delivered on the promises he made in 2020 when he was seeking their mandate.

He said, “For the past 24 months, we have been able to record modest achievements with the profound support of our people and indeed our great party. Within this period, we have been able to touch lives directly and indirectly; sponsored and co-sponsored bills and motions of national significance and provide support for our people in Epe, Ikorodu, Ibeju/Lekki, Kosofe and Somolu Local Government Areas, especially at the time of critical needs and national emergencies.

“In the spirit of collective responsibility, we set out on a  mission anchored on #DoingGood, a mantra we have consciously nurtured and faithfully actualised since my inauguration on December 15, 2020. This is founded on three major pillars – legislative role, empowerment and endowment.

“In these three focal areas, we have been doggedly making strategic interventions in the last 24 months, and the people of Lagos East have been at the centre of these interventions.

“Under legislation, for instance, we sponsored 13 private member bills; co-sponsored three other bills and moved two motions on issues of national importance. Of note among these bills are Copyright Bill, 2021 and Franchise Regulation Bill 2022. When finally enacted, these legislations will be catalysts for revamping Nigeria’s creative economy; strengthening the country’s macro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and empowering a teeming number of our youths to effectively operate in the digital environment.

“I have equally moved the motion on the need to urgently rehabilitate Ikorodu-Itoikin-Epe and Ikorodu-Shagamu roads. As we all know, these federal roads are of economic significance not just to Lagos East, but also our country. First, the roads directly connect all LGAs in Lagos East together and to other parts of the state. Second, the roads connect Lagos East to other states of the federation, especially those in South-west, South-east and South-south.

“Until our interventions, the roads had become deplorable and largely collapsed, a condition that subjected our people to undue hardship and undermined socio-economic activities in the district. While the rehabilitation of the Ikorodu-Sagamu road is already at the stage of completion, the federal government promised just the penultimate week to expedite the rehabilitation of the road linking Ikorodu to Itoikin and Epe”.

The Senator also informed the people of Senator Abiru Innovation Lab(SAIL), the first of its kind innovation hub in Lagos East Senatorial District he set up for young people and entrepreneurs, N300 Million Naira Constituency Intervention Revolving Loan, Health facilities and construction of blocks of classrooms he facilitated across the district, provision of grant to 1,250 market women, award of bursary to 600 higher institution stu and monthly support for over 2500 vulnerable constituents among others laudable achievements.

In his remarks, Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu urged residents of Lagos East to support and vote for the Senator and himself and other candidates of the party in 2023. According to the governor, his administration had impacted lives and communities in Lagos East in the area of infrastructure, health and education.

The Chairman of the party in Lagos State, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, said the rally was an opportunity to showcase the achievements of the APC in Lagos State, and in particular the giant strides of various elected officials on the platform of the party.

Director-General, APC Lagos State Governorship Campaign Council, Senator Ganiyu Olarenwaju Solomon (GOS) said he was sure that APC would win all the way. “ As we are winning in Lagos, we are winning all over the federation”, the former lawmaker declared.

The apex leader in Ikorodu Division and member of the Governance Advisory Council in Lagos State, His Excellency, Prince Abiodun Ogunleye commended the APC-led administration in Lagos for meeting yearnings of Lagosians.

Other leaders and dignitaries in attendance include: Alhaji Akanni Seriki Bami, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, Senator Anthony Adefuye, Omooba Olumuyiwa Sosanya,  Otunba Busura Adedeji Alebiosu, Lagos APC, Hon Babajimi Benson, Publicity Secretary, Hon Seye Oladejo, Alhaji Bode Oyedele, Dr. Tola Kasali, House of Representatives candidate , Lagos State House of Assembly candidates among other notable leaders of the APC.

‘MY RE-ELECTION BID BASED ON ACHIEVEMENTS’, SANWO-OLU DECLARES AS GOVERNOR UNVEILS CAMPAIGN BRAND ~Ajasa-Info

• Lagosians propagate ’Greater Lagos Rising’ in roadshows, boat concerts

A multi-dimensional roadshow, comprising power bikers, activation rigs and mobile advertising vans, was spotted across cities in Lagos State on Wednesday with flashes of an appealing slogan: “A Greater Lagos Rising”. The overall activities formally flagged off the re-election campaign of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

In riverine communities, hundreds of residents rolled out branded canoes in a special sea show, traversing the Lagos waterways to kick off the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship electioneering.

The events culminated into a press briefing held in Ikeja, where Gov. Sanwo-Olu and Director General of the APC Governorship Campaign Council, Sen. Ganiyu Solomon, unveiled the campaign assets, including theme, colour and font branding.

Represented by Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, the Governor declared: “I am running on records; get ready for more.”

Sanwo-Olu said the theme of his second term campaign reinforced continuity of his achievements in first term. He said the idea of “Greater Lagos Rising” captured the passion and resilience of young creative citizens toiling to change the story of the State in music, movies, fashion, sports, manufacturing and technological innovations.

The Governor said renewal of his mandate would further strengthen his administration’s resolve to scale up efficiency of his development blueprint, known as THEMES Agenda, and unlock more socio-economic opportunities for hardworking residents.

He said: “Our campaign assets capture the audacity and spirit of Lagos in the rising of the city. The campaign assets are not some forms of self-adulation but fitting credit to the contributions of hardworking Lagosians, especially the youth, to the height Lagos has attained today. This campaign is not about me and my team alone. It is a tribute to all our youths who are doing amazing works to put Lagos on the global map. Renewing our mandate will represent people’s confidence in the collective progress we have made in the last three and half years against all odds.

“There is no doubt we are running on records. Evidence of our achievements abounds to discerning minds. Lagos is on the threshold of history as the first sub-national to deliver on a mass rail system; the Blue Rail Line is being test run ahead of commissioning and operations in the coming weeks. The Red Line is also scheduled for commissioning in the first quarter of 2023. We have completed and inaugurated 16 housing schemes within this first term. Our people are confident that we can do a lot more after they witnessed the commissioning 62 fire-fighting vehicles in a day to keep our citizens safe.

“This administration, within three years, upgraded two tertiary institutions to degree-awarding schools to raise human capital and prepare our young people for future jobs. Our Government trained 18,000 teachers under the Eko Excel Initiative. People who benefited from Ilera Eko Health Insurance scheme now see the proof that something is changing in the State. Honest residents know that Imota Rice Mill and the Lekki Deep Sea Port are incontrovertible proofs that a greater Lagos is indeed rising and unfolding before their eyes. Now, imagine what we can do with additional four years.”

The Governor explained the essence of yellow as dominant colour in the campaign materials, noting that the shade symbolised the energy, youthfulness, enthusiasm, optimism and happiness which are common expressions among Lagos residents.

The brand colour also came with a mix of foggy, signifying warmth, transformation, freedom and fun said to be hallmarks of the State.

All the colours used, Sanwo-Olu said, collectively evoked the resilience of the State to remain on the path of progress, despite being hit by global COVID-19 pandemic and the violence resulting from ENDSARS protests.

He said: “Our campaign will be reinforcing the energy, remarkable audacity and unbroken resilience of our people. Rising is a proof of growth. Our actions in the last three and half years have blended into our Greater Lagos mantra, with the State rising and transforming before our very eyes.

“When we say a ‘Greater Lagos is Rising’, we are drawing attention of our citizens to the positive changes taking place all over the State, including growth of our economy, breath-taking rebuilding of Lagos and the renewal of hope in citizens. Let us write a new history.”

Solomon said the party would be rolling out campaign materials to all nooks and crannies of the State to showcase the achievements of the Sanwo-Olu administration, urging residents of Lagos to support the effort to renew the Governor’s mandate.

Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Sam Egube, said Sanwo-Olu’s re-election bid was proper. He noted that Lagos rose in its challenging period, saying: “Mr. Governor never allowed those challenges to bring Lagos on its knees.”

Egube said the simultaneous development of two rail lines, building of a deep seaport and delivery of international standard bus stations were evidence that Greater Lagos had started to rise.

NATIONWIDE FLOOD ISSUE: LASG RESTATES CAPACITY TO MANAGE ITS SITUATION ~Ajasa-Info

Image

Following renewed fears of residents about the ravages of massive flooding nationwide, Lagos State convened a meeting of all critical stakeholders to evaluate the state’s preparedness for any eventuality, with a resolution that while Lagos is not totally immune to flooding, the state will continue to effectively manage its situation.

Addressing the meeting held at Alausa Secretariat over the weekend, which was convened on the directives of Mr. Governor, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tunji Bello said now is the time for all enforcement arms of the state to step up their supervisory roles.

He stated that the enforcement impact must be felt by recalcitrant people and institutions who have defied the government and built structures on drainage alignments, flood plains and low-lying areas now more than ever before.

He added that despite the fact that Lagos is a coastal city with almost one-third of its total landmass underwater, what it experiences after each bout of heavy rainfalls is flash flooding which will recede a few hours after the cessation of such rainfalls.

Tunji Bello, while sympathising with all those who suffered one form of loss or another nationwide due to flooding, said Lagos is constantly monitoring the Ogun River which flows directly into the Lagos Lagoon.

He said the Seasonal Rainfall Pattern for 2022 released earlier in the year by the Nigerian Meteorological Services NIMET had predicted that the peak of the resurgent rainfall for the year will be in October.

The Commissioner said Lagos may be susceptible to the dangers of flooding with the periodic release of rainwater from Oyan Dam by the managers, the Ogun Oshun River Basin Development Authority to maintain the sanctity of the dam and which may increase the level of water of the Lagoon.

He noted that as a result of this development, residents of all identified areas like Ketu, Alapere, Agric, Owode Onirin, Ajegunle, Alagbole, Kara, Isheri Olowora, Araromi Otun Orisha Community, Agiliti, Maidan, Mile 12, Odo Ogun, Owode Elede, Agboyi I, Agboyi II, Agboyi III which are banks to the Ogun River are again being alerted to be ready and alert to relocate at any given time.

The Commissioner informed that what many fail to realise is that the position and location of Lagos State on the map makes the Lagos Lagoon the convergence point of all water from the Ogun River, Ona Ibu River, Osun River, Sasha River that runs across the many South West States.

He explained that the State is also working with the Ogun Oshun River Basin Development Authority to ensure that rainwater releases that pass through the Oyan dam have a minimal negative impact on the residents.

Bello reiterated that the State, through the Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources, is embarking on massive dredging and cleaning of all primary and secondary collectors across the state.

“This is in addition to the construction of new channels as well as deployment of the quick response Emergency Flood Abatement Gang to free up manholes and blackspots in an effort to ensure that the drains perform at optimum capacity to be able to contain runoffs”, he said.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources, Engr. Nurudeen Shodeinde assured residents that the State Government is upping the ante in terms of its preparedness on a 24/7 basis.

He gave kudos to the State Governor for always providing the financial wherewithal to the Ministry which has enabled it to actualise many of its plans and programme to ensure a flood-free Lagos.

Shodeindee also said other residents living along major drainage channels of System I to 169 around the state must also be wary of the effects of flash flooding.

He recalled that a few days ago, areas like Oko Oba, Abattoir and Aboru in Alimosho were flooded after a two-hour rainfall which had an intensity that had not been witnessed in the last 30 years due to climate change.

The Permanent Secretary stressed that such one-off rainfall of unprecedented intensity should be expected during this period and should be prepared for.

In line with the desire of the State Government to ensure effective coordination of energy resources that will keep the Lagos economy on the path of growth, the Lagos State Electricity Board (LSEB) has held a two-day strategic retreat for members of staff of the Agency.

In his address at the event, the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Olalere Odusote revealed that the capacity-building retreat is required to position the State towards attracting Private Sector collaboration and investment in the energy sector.

“The Lagos State Electricity Policy which is designed to provide a cleaner, reliable, affordable and uninterrupted power supply to residents requires proper coordination for its implementation”, he stated.

According to him, the framework articulated constitutional, legal, engineering and commercial foundations for creating a viable sub-national electricity system that would cater for the energy needs of the state.

He said the new approach to energy security that the state government is facilitating identifies with the global response of ensuring that all human beings, including future generations are entitled to benefit from modern energy services and at the same time be protected from their negative side effects.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ms. Shola Shasore, acknowledged the relevance of building the competence of the workforce for effective service delivery.

She stated that the attainment of the government’s vision on energy generation and distribution hinged on building competence in the workforce to drive the implementation with proper monitoring and evaluation.

He said the theme of the retreat: “Guaranteeing Security of Lagos through Sustainable Energy whilst Managing Talents in Disruptive Times and Leveraging Corporate Transformation”, captured major targets of the Sustainable Development Goals.

While acknowledging that the economy of Lagos as the commercial hub of Nigeria makes it pertinent to restructure the traditional energy security calculus, Tijani affirmed that implementing the comprehensive energy blueprint will support the State’s quest towards becoming a 21st Century Economy.
